STANFORD, Calif. – Last month, the Sun Devil women's basketball team gave then-No. 1 Stanford its toughest game of the season up to that point in what ended in a 68-60 Stanford win. The Sun Devils were not able to duplicate the success they had in that contest in Friday's rematch as Stanford shot 58 percent on its way to a 80-41 victory.
Eboni Walker (11 points) and Taya Hanson (10 points) led the way for the Sun Devils (10-8, 5-8 Pac-12), who shot 25 percent against a Stanford team that came into the game leading the Pac -12 in scoring defense and field goal percentage defense.
As a team, the Sun Devils had one of their best games taking care of the ball as they tied their second-lowest turnover total of the season with 12.
Maggie Besselink scored a season-high eight points and tied Jaddan Simmons for the team lead in rebounds with four. Simmons and Jamie Loera both paced ASU with three assists while Walker and Sydnei Caldwell (two steals each) combined for four of the team's six steals.
The Cardinal (20-2, 17-2) scored the first 11 points of the game on its way to a 19-7 lead after 10 minutes. The Sun Devils scored their first four points off free throws coming courtesy of Walker and Katelyn Levings. Hanson's 3-pointer in the final seconds of the quarter cut Stanford's lead to 12.
Five different Sun Devils scored for the Sun Devils in the second quarter. Besselink led the way with five points while Hanson, Walker and Simmons also made baskets for the Sun Devils, who were only able to shoot 24 percent in the first half as Stanford took a 40-19 lead to the locker room.
Walker scored seven points (3-3 FGs) and Caldwell posted four of her six points in the final 10 minutes to help the Sun Devils record their best scoring quarter of the game with 16 points.
