EAST LANSING, Mich. -- It was yet another goaltending battle between the Sun Devils and Michigan State in the final game of the series, and this time a late goal in favor of the Spartans led to a 2-1 loss for ASU Monday afternoon at Munn Ice Arena.
After heading into the third period tied 1-1 for the second game in a row, it was the Spartans on the right side of the tie this time. A collision at the net between MSU's Nico Muller and ASU goalie Cole Brady late in the 3rd period led to another late review by the officials, who confirmed a good goal to give the Spartans the 2-1 lead and eventual victory.
"Our guys were tremendous. I thought we were really good in the second and third periods," said head coach Greg Powers. "I thought we carried the play and played well enough tonight. We deserved to win the game."

- "That's how hockey works," said Demetrios Koumontzis. "You don't always get the bounces you want or the calls you want and it was a tough ending, but there's nothing you can really do about it."
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Late in the first period, a goaltender interference call on Koumontzis led to a Spartan power play. Jagger Joshua made a play off a shot in front, and wrapped it around Cole Brady for the 1-0 lead just a second after the man advantage ended.
- With 1:26 left in the 2nd period, Koumontzis would get one back on the Sun Devil power play to tie the game, as a redirect went right to his tape for a quick shot on the back door.
- With just under four minutes left in the 3rd, it was the Spartans this time winning the game late. Nicolas Muller crashed the net with a loose puck in the crease, and as he collided with Brady, the momentum pushed the puck into the net.
GAME NOTES
- It was just the second time this season the Sun Devils outshot their opponent (33-24), firing 15 and 16 shots on goal in the 2nd and 3rd periods, respectively.
- Demetrios Koumontzis scored his first goal since Dec. 3 vs. Notre Dame.
- Six of these two teams' eight meetings have been one-goal games with ASU leading the series at 4-2-1-1. The other two games were two goal games.
