No. 23 Sun Devils Fall to Texas Tech

LUBBOCK, Texas - Despite a heroic effort, the No. 23 Sun Devils (5-2) fell just short of a victory Saturday morning against Texas Tech (4-1), losing 4-3 in Lubbock, Texas. ASU took the upper hand to begin the contest, claiming the doubles point on courts one and three. The Sun Devils hung on through singles play with match wins from No. 115 Sammi Hampton and senior Tereza Kolarova, but in the end could not close out the match in their favor. The loss snapped ASU's four-match winning streak. 
 
Doubles
ASU started the day with a win in doubles competition thanks to No. 50 Ilze Hattingh/Lauryn John-Baptiste on court one and Sammi Hampton/Marianna Argyrokastriti on court three. Court three was first off, winning 6-1, and Hattingh/John-Baptiste took a 6-4 victory to put the Sun Devils up 1-0. The No. 2 pairing of Tereza Kolarova/Giulia Morlet was tied at 5-5 with Skriabina Margarita/Olivia Peet but went unfinished due to the clinch.
 
Singles
The Sun Devils' momentum then hit a roadblock with three quick defeats on courts one, two and three in singles play. Giulia Morlet and John-Baptiste's matches were determined in two sets, with Morlet dropping 1-6, 2-6 on court four and John-Baptiste losing 2-6, 5-7 on court three. No. 37 Ilze Hattingh looked hopeful, winning 6-1 on her first set with Texas Tech's 100th-ranked Kaitlin Staines. The contest was evened up in the second set when Staines went up 6-2, but Hattingh ultimately fell short in a third set that finished 0-6. ASU remained in the game after No. 115 Hampton came out victorious in her three-set match, defeating her opponent 6-4, 5-7, 7-5. Things were starting to look positive thanks to Kolarova's 6-4, 7-5 sweep on court six, but the game was ultimately decided by a three-set rally by Marianna Argyrokastriti that ended 6-1, 5-7, 3-6.

The Sun Devils have a pair of matches in Houston next week. ASU plays Wichita State Saturday at 10 a.m. before taking on Rice Sunday at 10 a.m.
