AUSTIN, Texas – The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) today announced that track and field student-athletes Samantha Noennig (first team) and Jackson Lewis (third team) were named to the 2020 Academic All-America® Division I Track & Field/Cross Country teams, as selected by CoSIDA.
Noennig (4.0 GPA/earned Health Sciences) entered the 2020 campaign as the defending shot put champion in both the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championships. Noennig would go on to earn NCAA Indoor all-America honors after finishing no lower than second place in all but one of her events this season, including a pair of first-place finishes and a second-place finish at the MPSF Championships. In January, Noennig was one of 10 women on the preseason watch list for the Bowerman Award. She was the third Sun Devil woman to make the preseason watch list, following former teammate and two-time finalist Maggie Ewen (2017-2018) and Anna Jelmini (2014). A four-time All-American and two-time conference champion, Noennig, who earned her undergraduate degree last month, was most recently named to both the 2020 Pac-12 Spring Honor Roll and MPSF Indoor All-Academic Team. In addition to her individual national and conference titles, Noennig also earned a silver at the 2019 Pac-12 Championships after taking all-conference honors in the event as a freshman back in 2018.
The team captain of the Sun Devil men's cross country team, Lewis (4.0 GPA/Computer Science) was ASU's top finisher in both of the squad's 2020 postseason meets (Pac-12 Championship/NCAA West Regional). In the NCAA Regional race, the Sun Devil junior ran nearly 30 seconds faster than he had run in the regional a year ago. Lewis' performance at the Pac-12 Championship was ASU's best individual finish at the meet since 2015. Lewis kicked off the 2020 indoor season with a first-place finish in the mile run. At the McCravy Memorial, Lewis ran away with the men's 3,000-meter crown with a then-personal best 8:09.66. Lewis closed the 2020 indoor season with a personal best 8:03.16 in the 3000m at the 2020 MPSF Indoor Championships to finish fourth in the event. During the 2019-20 campaign, Lewis was named to the Pac-12 Fall Honor Roll (Cross Country), the MPSF Indoor All-Academic Team and the Pac-12 Spring Honor Roll (track and field).
Noennig was one of 17 student-athletes on the Academic All-America® Division I women's track & field/cross country team (47 student-athletes) with a perfect 4.0 GPA while Lewis was one of 11 to accomplish the feat on the men's side (46 student-athletes).
