TEMPE, Ariz. – As announced by the NCAA Tuesday, Arizona State University recorded a multiyear Academic Progress Rate (APR) average of 993 over a four-year period (2015-16 to 2018-19), which is an all-time ASU high. This is the fourth year in a row ASU averaged a 990-plus and the Sun Devils finished with the second-highest score in the Pac-12.
ASU's single year overall APR score for 2018-19 is 993, which is the highest score in Arizona State history. The national multiyear APR score for all NCAA Division 1 programs is 983.
"This is the accumulation of years of tremendous work by our team of student-athletes, coaches, staff and the leadership of the Office of Student-Athlete Development," Vice President for University Athletics Ray Anderson said. "The continuous high academic performance of our student-athletes reflects our commitment to a culture of both academic and athletic excellence."
For single year (2018-19) APR scores, 16 of the 23 sports at Arizona State earned a perfect 1000, including 11 of the 13 women's teams. The Sun Devils also had impressive multiyear APR numbers, with 11 teams earning a perfect score. Nine women's teams reached that perfect 1000 mark.
Sun Devil women's tennis records a perfect 1000 once again and has done so in every year of the program, the only team in the sport among the Division I Power Five conferences to do so.
Five teams reached all-time multiyear APR highs for their program: lacrosse (984), soccer (1000), men's swimming and diving (993), women's swimming and diving (1000) and wrestling (992). Multiple teams also continued streaks of a perfect multiyear APR score. Men's golf has been perfect for six years in a row, while women's golf and gymnastics have both earned a perfect score for four-straight years. Women's basketball, men's tennis and water polo have started streaks of their own, all three teams earning a perfect multiyear APR score for the second-consecutive year. Beach volleyball and women's cross country got back to 1000 this year, the former earning that perfect mark in three of its four years of eligibility.
Within the Pac-12, 12 teams were in first place for their APR multiyear averages: men's golf, men's swimming and diving, men's tennis, women's basketball, women's cross country, women's golf, gymnastics, soccer, women's swimming and diving, women's tennis, beach volleyball and water polo.
Twelve Sun Devil teams – men's basketball, women's basketball, beach volleyball, women's cross country, men's golf, women's golf, gymnastics, soccer, women's swimming and diving, men's tennis, women's tennis, and water polo – earned a place in the top-10 percent as announced last week. Men's golf earned its sixth consecutive top-10 recognition while women's golf and gymnastics earned their fourth in a row. Twelve teams named was a program record and put ASU in second in the Pac-12.
"We are unrelenting in our commitment to providing a culture and resources that allow our student-athletes to achieve their fullest potential academically," Deputy Associate Athletic Director and Chief of Staff Jean Boyd said. "Our mission is to achieve the highest level of championship caliber performance in sport and in developing leaders in life. Our APR results announced today are evidence of our tremendous progress."
Since the beginning of APR measurement in 2003-04, ASU's average for all sports has increased from 937.
APR tracks the academic progress of each student-athlete, including eligibility, retention, and graduation in the calculation, and provides a clear picture of the current academic culture for each sport as well as department-wide. In 2014, the NCAA Board of Directors implemented a cut score of 930, below which teams will be penalized with loss of postseason competition.
