FEDERAL WAY, Wash. – No. 10 Sun Devil men's swimming excelled on day two of the 2020 Pac-12 Championships, with several Sun Devils contributing school record-breaking times in the 500 free. Freshman Julian Hill contributed a record-breaking mark in the preliminary round while several others put up would be-school records in the finals.
"We had another great night tonight," coach Bob Bowman said. "The 500 frees were a real highlight."
The men began the morning off on a high note as Hill touched the wall in the 500 free preliminary round at 4:15.62 to down the record set in 1993 by Christiano Michelena. That time gave him second place in the prelim, and Ben Olszewski's would-be record breaker at 4:17.30 secured him fifth place.
Freshman Andrew Gray joined the duo in the consolation final, placing 13th overall with a time of 4:18.75, another would-be record setter.
"Five different swimmers broke our ASU record seven times between prelims and finals and that record had stood since 1993," Bowman said. "Our 200 free relay posted the ninth-best time in the country and another school record. We look forward to improving on that at NCAAs."
The 50 free prelims followed, as three Sun Devils secured spots in the championship final while two competed in the consolation final. The all-underclassmen championship heat group included junior Evan Carlson, freshman Jack Dolan and sophomore Cody Bybee making the cut. Carter Swift and Zach Poti took consolation final spots.
Beginning with the finals for the 500 free, Olszewski raced to a fourth place finish, resetting Hills' ASU record at 4:14.38. He missed out on a podium finish by just three-tenths of a second in the close race with less than one second separating him from first place. Liam Bresette contributed 13 points of his own with his 6th place finish, Hill contributed 12 points with his 7th place finish, and Gray finished in 11th to round out the Sun Devils in the event.
With ASU making up nearly half of the championship field in the 50 free, Carlson's time of 19.50 secured him sixth while Dolan and Bybee tied for seventh at 19.52.
The men finished up the night with their second podium finish of the evening with their third place mark in the 200 free relay. The foursome of Swift, Carlson, Bybee and Dolan worked together in the effort, touching the wall at 1:16.79 for the ASU record in the event and an NCAA "A" Cut.
ASU is back in action tomorrow morning for the preliminary rounds of the 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast and 100 back. Fans can keep up with the action all season long by following @ASUSwimDive on Twitter.
