TEMPE, Ariz. -- No. 18 Sun Devil women's tennis took home their second win of the weekend and walked away with a doubles upset on Sunday afternoon in a 4-2 win over Rice at Whiteman Tennis Center.
ASU's top pairing of junior Tereza Kolarova and senior Ilze Hattingh -- ranked No. 55 in the country -- got doubles started with an upset victory over Rice's No. 40 doubles pair Priya Niezgoda and Anastasia Smirnova, 6-2, on court one. The other two courts split with redshirt senior Sammi Hampton and junior Lauryn John-Baptiste coming out on top for ASU on court three, 7-5, to claim the doubles point.
"I'm really happy with our play today. I thought we came out and played very well on court 1 and 3 in doubles, and we carried that momentum into the singles," said head coach Sheila McInerney. "Our seniors Ilze, Sammi and Savannah were super solid again today which allowed us to close out the match. I'm pleased to get the win over a very good Rice team."
No. 29 Ilze Hattingh put the Devils in the driver's seat for singles, finishing first as she won her first set 6-1 before finishing the match in straight sets, 6-4. Hampton made it 3-1 with her match on court two, battling in the first set to a 6-4 win before coming out on top 6-2 in set two against Rice's Michael Haet.
On court 6, Slaysman sealed the match with a tight 7-5 battle in set one before running the table in set two, 6-1, for a Sun Devil victory.
ASU will travel to Columbus to face Kentucky on Saturday, February 22 at noon MST, followed by a pivotal match-up with No. 10 Ohio State on Sunday, February 23 at 11 a.m. MST.
The Sun Devils return home Feb. 28 for a doubleheader against Texas Tech and Cal Poly at Whiteman Tennis Center. The first match against the Red Raiders is set for 11 a.m. MST followed by a 3 p.m. MST match vs. Cal Poly.
