COLUMBUS, Ohio -- For the third-straight game, Sun Devil Hockey went to overtime but this time rallied from a three-goal deficit that resulted in a 4-4 tie against No. 18 Ohio State at Value City Arena.
The Sun Devils (3-6-2) entered the second period trailing 3-0, but back-to-back goals by freshman forward Michael Mancinelli and an early third period goal by redshirt junior Chris Grando brought the game to a 3-3 tie. Junior Jordan Sandhu buried a loose rebound to give ASU a 4-3 lead early in the 3rd before Ohio State (3-5-1) tied it up just over halfway through the frame.
"To claw back from down three after 34 days on the road, the character of this team to do that was so impressive," said head coach Greg Powers. "I'm so proud of our guys and it's a great tie. We're in a position to win this series tomorrow. For us to claw back was really impressive."
The Sun Devils look to close 2020 with a series win tomorrow as they rematch with the Buckeyes at 3:30 MST on BTN+.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Ohio State came out hot and scored three goals in a matter of 2:23, as Kamil Sadlocha and Matt Cassidy tallied their first goals of the year, while Mark Cheremeta netted his second for an early 3-0 lead halfway through the 1st period.
- Freshman goaltender Cole Brady was replaced by Evan DeBrouwer at the 11:41 mark of the 1st period.
- The Sun Devils responded in the middle frame, as freshman Michael Mancinelli recorded his first collegiate goal after creating a turnover in the offensive zone and punching home the loose puck through the wickets of Nappier.
- With under four minutes left in the 2nd, Mancinelli split the Buckeye d-men over the blue line while Jax Murray fired a shot on net that provided a big rebound in front for him to punch home to cut the OSU lead to one.
- ASU outshot the Buckeyes 17-7 in the 2nd.
- Fifty seconds into the 3rd period, redshirt junior Chris Grando stole a loose puck behind the net and came around to tuck it in uncontested to tie the game at three.
- Five minutes later, Ohio State tied it back up as Tate Singleton also picked up his first goal of the season with a tap in on the back door.
GAME NOTES:
- This was the first time the Sun Devils came back from a three-goal deficit since coming back to beat Brown in overtime on Jan. 12, 2020.
- Freshman forward Michael Mancinelli recorded his first collegiate goal and first multi-goal or multi-point game.
- ASU outshot the Buckeyes 40-27, becoming the first game they've outshot their opponent all season.
- Freshman forward Matthew Kopperud tallied his 12th point of the season, ending his two-goal pointless streak. He is now tied for the most points in the country and remains tied for first in goals scored.
- After replacing freshman Cole Brady in the 1st period, Evan DeBrouwer went on to make 18 saves on 19 shots faced.
