HOUSTON – The Sun Devil Women's Golf program had a strong showing at the 2020 U.S. Women's Open, which wrapped up on Monday at Champions Golf Club.
Current Sun Devil Women's Golf sophomore Linn Grant became the talk of the LPGA Major Championship thanks to a brilliant start to the tournament, finding herself in sole possession of second place midway through the weekend.
She showed the poise and maturity of a veteran by carding back-to-back 69's (-2), garnering national attention. During a second round in which many of the leaders faltered, Grant remained spectacular, with her highlights from the round appearing on ESPN's Sportscenter later that night.
Making her U.S. Women's Open debut, 2017 National Champion Linnea Strom put together a solid weekend. She finished in the Top-15, earning a tie for 13th, the best finish of her career at a LPGA Major. Her 289 (+5) was due to a great start, shooting a 69 (-2) in the first round. She moved up 12 spots on the final day and became the highest finishing Sun Devil after capping her outing with a 72.
Fifth-year senior and current member of Sun Devil Women's Golf Olivia Mehaffey got another taste of participating in a LPGA Tour event, competing in her third major of the 2020 season. Mehaffey now has accumulated a significant amount of professional experience as an amateur having played in five LPGA Major Championships.
She finished with a 149 (+7), the 10th best score of the 24 elite amateurs at the event. Mehaffey improved her score by five strokes from the first to the second day, with her 72 (+1) representing the sixth-best score of any amateur.
Two Sun Devil alumni finished in a tie for 54th, with Anna Nordqvist and Azahara Munoz managing to make the cut after a solid two round performance. Like many golfers in the field, the duos scores were impacted by the weather changes over the final two days. The fourth Sun Devil for life competing at the U.S. Women's Open was Carlota Ciganda, who barely missed the cut with a 146 (+4).
Grant and Mehaffey will continue their busy this month, as they will team up on the International side for the rescheduled 2020 Palmer Cup, taking place December 21-23 at Bay Hill Club in Orlando.

Grant finished the tournament with a 291 (+7), finishing in the Top-25 among the best golfers in the World in a tie for 23rd. Among the 24 amateurs in the field, Grant finished with the fourth-best total, one of only six amateurs to make the cut.
