Sun Devil Women's Golf welcomed in two highly-touted freshmen from their own backyard, as Xavier Prep standouts Ashley Menne and Breyana Matthews have joined the squad for the 2020-21 season. The local products enjoyed plenty of success during their high school careers, something they will look to carry with them as they make the transition to the college game.

Before they enter their first season as Sun Devils, let's "Get to Know" the freshman duo. The "Meet the New Sun Devils" series starts with three-time AIA Division I Individual State Champion Ashley Menne. Menne is one of the two signees out of Xavier Prep, which won three-consecutive State Championships (2016-18). The local high school has produced several successful golfers at the next level over the years, including Head Coach Missy Farr-Kaye

Menne was the 2018 state title by going four-under at Tucson National Golf Course, captured the 2017 individual state championships thanks to a three-under performance, and shared medalist honors in a rain-shortened 2016 AIA Championship event her freshman season. She was recognized as the Arizona High School Girls Golfer of the Year at the AZ Central Sports Awards each of the four years she was a Gator.

In addition to her success at the prep level, Menne has also earned hardware at some of the top competitive junior events. She seta record by collecting four consecutive Junior Golf Association of Arizona individual titles. As a result, she is a four-time winner of the JGAA Player of the Year Award. It total, she earned 43 victories victories over four years prior to arriving in Tempe. 

At historic Pebble Beach, she made headlines after claiming the female Pro-Junior title paired with PGA Tour veteran Tom Lehman at the 16th Pure Insurance Championship. Menne has reached as high as 189th in the World Amateur Golf Rankings. 

She has been staying busy despite the unprecedented circumstances, playing in several safe and competitive events. She was recently crowned the AIG Women's Amateur Stroke Play Champion at Grayhawk Golf Course, the home of the 2021-23 Men's and Women's NCAA Championships. Learn more about the newest member of Sun Devil Women's Golf:

Q: What sold you on Arizona State?
The ASU golf coaches, AZ being my home, the fabulous practice facility and the vibe of ASU.
 
Q: What have you enjoyed about ASU most so far?    
I loved the ability to golf every day at a top notched college golf facility. 
 
Q: Where is your favorite place to eat in Arizona?
Currently, Postinos.  Subject to change.
 
Q: How special is it to be coached by someone who has won a NCAA Championship as a player, assistant, and Head Coach?
The connection is deep as it starts from way back at high school level when we had Sister Lynn as our coach.  Coach Missy has been there and done it - she is very familiar to with the mechanics of playing in NCAA D! golf and how to get the job done.
 
Q: If you could meet any professional athlete/celeb who would it be and why?
Easily Tiger Woods. He is the greatest golfer of all time and I would love to hear his stories and learn from his experiences. 
 
Q: Best memory from playing golf in High School? 
Winning State with my teammates.    
 
Q: Biggest thing you learned from winning multiple State Championships?
Other than to persevering even when the odd are against you, I would say having a team of supportive people is critical
 
Q: Any hobbies outside of golf?
Used to do pottery and play the violin. However, I don't have time to do these anymore.
 
Q: Favorite course to play in Arizona besides Papago?
Mesa Country Club.
 
Q: If you had to play another sport what would you choose? 
Swimming      
 
Q: What is your favorite quote?

Q: Something many people might not know about you? 
I was born in Singapore and lived there for 9 years.  
 
Q: Goal you aspire to achieve as a Sun Devil?
To win NCAA Championship.
 
Q: What is your dream vacation?
I want to travel to Europe to see the Vatican, the Colosseum, scale the Swiss Alps, see the Big Ben and Eiffel Tower, cruise on River Danube, play golf at St Andrews, etc.
 
Q: Who is your biggest hero? 
Sister Lynn and Coach Tui (Tui Selvaratnam, member of Sun Devil Women's Golf; 1996-99) from Xavier College Prep.  
 
Q: Best part of having Breyana as a teammate?
We've played junior golf since we were 12 and were team mates at Xavier College Prep.  Having her as teammate again in ASU made the collegiate transition easier. I would also say having bre as a teammate has been so much fun and I could not have asked for a better roommate/friend.
