TEMPE, Ariz. – The No. 10 Arizona State women's water polo team is set to host the third annual Cross-Conference Challenge tournament Friday-Sunday, Jan. 31 – Feb. 2.
 
The Sun Devils will host No. 3(T) Hawai'i, No. 15 Princeton, No. 25 Azusa Pacific, Cal State East Bay, Sonoma State and Ottawa University of Arizona in the three-day tournament which will feature 14 matches in total.
 
ASU got off to a hot start last weekend, going 2-0 on opening day in two matches against Ottawa University. Every single Sun Devil field player scored at least once over the course of the day and the team totaled 26 assists in the two matches.
 
The Sun Devils will play one game Friday (9 a.m. vs. Azusa Pacific), two games Saturday (10:15 a.m. vs Hawai'i, 1:30 p.m. vs. Cal State East Bay) and two games Sunday (8 a.m. vs. Sonoma State, 1.15 p.m. vs. Princeton). The team's matches on Saturday and Sunday will be broadcast via the ASU Live Streams.
 
All of Friday's games will be held at the Sun Devil Fitness Complex before the action moves to ASU's home pool at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center for Saturday and Sunday.  All games are free and open to the public and the full tournament schedule can be found below.
 
Scouting the Opponents
No. 25 Azusa Pacific – 1-3
This will be the third consecutive tournament weekend for the Cougars, as they opened up their season going 1-1 at the UCSB Winter Invitational and last weekend went 0-2 at the Long Beach Mini.
 
The Sun Devils are 3-0 all-time against the Cougars. The Sun Devils' won last season's matchup in the Cross-Conference Challenge 17-2. It was the first time the teams had faced off since 2015. APU is led in scoring through four games this season by sophomore Milena Guzmán Ortiz with 10 goals.
 
No. 3(T) Hawai'i – 3-0
The Hawai'i Rainbow Warriors are on a hot streak to start their season, going 3-0 in the Rainbow Invite two weeks ago. The team has been on a scoring binge, scoring 21, 15 and 22 goals in their first three matches respectively.
 
Alba Bonamusa Boix and Lalelei Mata'afa lead the team in goals scored with 10 apiece, while Szonja Kuna has netted eight of her own.
 
The Sun Devils will be looking to get their first win against UH since defeating the Rainbow Warriors 7-6 in 2012.
 
Cal State East Bay – 1-0
The Pioneers are heading into the weekend 1-0 on the season, having defeated Fresno Pacific University last weekend. Leti Mosqueda and Adrien Van Dyke led the offensive effort with four goals each, and goalkeeper Daniela Passoni totaled 11 saves in the match.
 
ASU holds a 4-0 advantage in the all-time series against CSUEB. This will be the first time the teams face one another since 2018, an 11-5 win for the Sun Devils.
 
Sonoma State – 0-3
Sonoma State will be coming to Tempe looking for their first win of the seaso after losing to MPSF contenders San Jose State and Stanford as well as Pacific in their first week of play. The Seawolves are led in scoring by Jordan Williams (seven goals) and Cassidy Mundt (eight). Both had impressive showings against Pacific, as Williams scored three in the match and Mundt put in four.
 
The Sun Devils lead Sonoma State 2-0 all-time, having won in 2017 (18-3) and 2015 (20-2).
 
No. 15 Princeton – 0-0
The Cross-Conference Challenge will be the first weekend of play for the Tigers this weekend. They will match up against Cal State East Bay, Sonoma State and Hawai'I before taking on the Sun Devils in the weekend's penultimate match.
 
Princeton is coming off a 21-9 season last year in which they reached the CWPA Championship Game for a third consecutive season. ASU has never lost to the Tigers, holding a 4-0 advantage all-time. The teams last played in the same tournament last season and the Sun Devils won the match 13-6.
