SAN FRANCISCO – As announced by the Pac-12 Conference on Wednesday, Arizona State Wrestling's redshirt senior Zahid Valencia has been named Pac-12 Wrestler of the Week for his performances at Ohio State and the Sun Devil Duals this past week.
Valencia, rated the pound-for-pound best college wrestler in the country by FloWrestling, helped lead the Sun Devils to wins over Harvard, Campbell and No. 11 Iowa State on Saturday at Chase Field. The victory over the Cyclones was the Sun Devils' fourth win over a top-25 opponent this season and recorded the team's first 8-1 start since 2007.
Valencia is 17-0 this season and 118-3 on his career, moving into 10th on ASU's all-time career wins list. Over the week, Valencia notched four bonus point wins, with one major decision over Gavin Hoffman (Ohio State), one pin against Michael Doggett of Harvard and two more majors over No. 15 ranked Andrew Morgan (Campbell) and No. 14 Marcus Coleman (Iowa State). Valencia has now recorded bonus-points in 16 of 17 matches, doing so against six top-15 ranked opponents.
Over the weekend, Valencia surpassed 2011 National Champion Anthony Robles to set the record for the most career bonus-point victories in program history with 93.
This is Valencia's third time being chosen for the honor, as he was also named during his freshman and sophomore seasons.
The Pac-12 Conference will announce a Wrestler of the Week each Wednesday from Jan. 8 to Feb. 26 leading up to the Pac-12 Championships, set to take place in Palo Alto, Calif. on March 7, 2020.
