RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. – The Sun Devil women's tennis team started its year at the National Collegiate Tennis Classic this weekend and saw a new doubles duo of Tereza Kolarova and Cali Jankowski earn a spot in the East final after recording a win over a top-10 tandem.
After receiving a first-round bye, the Sun Devil duo earned a big quarterfinal upset over No. 10 Omirou/Meredith of Wake Forest, 8-4. Kolarova/Jankowski will play in the title match Sunday at 1 p.m. MST.
Individually, Jankowski advanced to the semifinal in the back draw of the singles tournament after a first-round bye and a quarterfinal sweep. She was scheduled to face a familiar face in Sun Devil junior Sasa Klanecek who advanced to the semifinal after she also recorded a 6-2, 6-2 sweep in the quarters, but ASU elected to sit the two women.
In the main draw, two-time All-American Lauryn John-Baptiste got through to the quarterfinal round before falling in a tiebreak third-set. Jankowski's partner Kolarova also made the quarters in the main draw and couldn't complete the comeback in her match, ultimately falling in the third set.
The NCTC will conclude Sunday with championship matches in the main and back draw.
