ROCKVILLE, Md. – Sun Devil Women's Golf senior Raquel Olmos is competing at the 120th U.S. Women's Amateur Championship, taking place August 3-9 at Woodmont Country Club.
The historic event attracts the top female amateur golfers from around the globe, all competing for the chance to claim one of the most prestigious titles in the sport. Past amateurs have used this tournament as a spring board into a lucrative professional career. Olmos continues the program's rich tradition at the U.S. Women's Amateur, as several Sun Devils have benefited as a result of the experience.
"We are excited for Raquel to play in her first USGA Women's Amateur amongst some of the best women's amateurs in the world," Sun Devil Women's Golf Head Coach Missy Farr-Kaye remarked. "She will be representing Arizona State and her beloved home country of Spain!"
Olmos is one of four competitors from Spain, with the 132-competitor field made up of individuals representing 21 different counties. The first round took place on Monday, with Raquel Olmos representing Arizona State well by getting off to a strong start. She fired a solid 71 (-1) to earn a spot in the top ten (T-7th) after day one. She has put herself in a position to finish in the top-half of the field in order to advance to the Round of 64.
The format sees the golfers playing two stroke play rounds of 18 holes before moving to match play until the championship match. The low 64 scorers after 36 holes of stroke play will advance to match play. If necessary, a playoff will be conducted to trim the draw to exactly 64 competitors. Once advanced to the round of 64, head-to-head single elimination pairings will determine the championship match. The finals will be a 36-hole showdown between the two finalists.
