Update from Ray AndersonUpdate from Ray Anderson
Sun Devil Nation,

It has been a few weeks since my last letter and I wanted to reach out to provide an update on the enhancements Sun Devil Athletics has made as we continue to work towards solidifying timelines for return to practice, and ultimately play.

Over the last few weeks we have welcomed over 150 student-athletes back to campus for voluntary workouts. This effort began June 15 in a phased approach with guidance from a Pac-12 assembled team of medical and infectious disease experts, and input from local and campus health officials and doctors. We have implemented multiple new protocols including COVID-19 testing, daily health checks, social distancing, one-way traffic flows in facilities, intensive sanitation efforts, quarantining or isolation when necessary and many other best practices.

As we've mentioned numerous times throughout the last several months, this is an extremely fluid situation and adjustments are being made daily, if not hourly. There is no playbook for this but we continue to take every precaution to provide the highest level of safety for the collective health of student-athletes and staff.

The return to voluntary workouts began with 27 football student-athletes, and each week we continue to integrate more of our athletic programs. To date, there are student-athletes from almost 20 of our 26 programs who have returned to Tempe and are participating in voluntary activities.

ASU as a whole is working diligently on plans for fall classes to begin Aug. 20 and although things may look very different on campus this fall, all measures are being taken to provide a healthy and safe environment for students to live and learn. You can learn more about the several options campus is providing students here.

Additionally, we have several staff members engrossed in internal and conference-wide committees actively working on contingency plans for our fans once we are able to return to play. We recognize many of our Pac-12 colleagues and other institutions across the country have made difficult decisions to cut sports and support staff in recent weeks. We remain steadfast in our intent and commitment to avoid such drastic measures through every means possible. We are entering a critical period of time which will inform us of many pieces to the larger puzzle of our fall seasons. Until we have more clarity on those timelines and the parameters in which we'll need to adhere to, we will continue to prepare for all scenarios to ensure the safest environment possible for the entire ASU community.

All my best to you and your loved ones for continued health and safety.
