TEMPE, Ariz. -- In partnership with Desert Financial Credit Union and Vitalant (formerly United Blood Services), Sun Devil Athletics hosted a blood drive Sunday, May 31 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. inside Desert Financial Arena.
Sun Devil coaches, staff and fans donated 131 units of blood within the four hour window. Every donation could help save up to three lives, totaling up to 327 lives.
Due to circumstances created by COVID-19, blood demand has increased by as much as 25% in May compared to April for things like childbirth, cancer treatments, essential medical procedures, and everyday emergencies.
Protective measures were implemented by Vitalant including temperature checks upon checking in and adequate spacing of chairs in the waiting, donation and refreshment areas to name a few. Masks were also required for donors, staff and volunteers.
