TEMPE, Ariz. – The Arizona State University athletics department is second in the Pac-12 Conference for most teams recognized by the NCAA for their high 2018-19 Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores with a total of 12 teams finishing in the top-10 percent.

Twelve ASU teams earned APR scores in the top-10 percent, as announced by the NCAA Tuesday. This is an all-time high total of teams recognized in the top-10 percent for APR in Arizona State history, beating out the previous record of eight.

The twelve teams are men's and women's basketball, beach volleyball, women's cross country, men's and women's golf, gymnastics, soccer, women's swimming and diving, men's and women's tennis, and women's water polo.

For women's golf and gymnastics, it is their fourth year in a row earning a top-10 recognition while men's golf earned its sixth consecutive. For men's tennis and water polo, it is their second year in a row being recognized. It is also the second consecutive year for women's basketball, fifth overall for that program. Four teams are starting new streaks: men's basketball (third overall, first since 2015-16), women's cross country (first since 2013-14), soccer (first since 2010-11) and women's swimming and diving (first ever). The Sun Devil women's tennis team has the honor of being in the top 10 percent for all 15 years of the program.

Congratulations to @TheSunDevils, now 2nd in the @pac12 for most teams recognized by the @NCAA for their high Academic Progress Rate (APR). Another great example of #SunDevil #Excellence. https://t.co/QqjHEqR363

For the past 15 years, NCAA APR has been used to measure academic achievement for all Division I sports teams. APR tracks academic progress each semester for each student-athlete on scholarship, accounting for eligibility, retention, and graduation, and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.

Scores required to be in the top-10 percent this year ranged from 985 to a perfect 1000. More than 1,300 teams from 321 schools have been recognized.

Multi-year APR's for all Division I sports will be announced by the NCAA on Tuesday, May 19.
