FEDERAL WAY, Wash. – Two Sun Devils added podium finishes tonight as No. 10 Sun Devil men's swimming completed their 2020 Pac-12 Championship run. The men finished in fourth place as a team to total 567 points.
"We ended a great championship meet with two more ASU records," coach Bob Bowman said. "I'm so proud of senior Ben Olszewski who broke the 1650 record."
Ben Olszewski put the first points on the board for the Sun Devils, bringing home 14 points with his fifth-place finish in the 1650 freestyle. His time of 14:52.84 also secured him the school record. Matthew Kint contributed points in the mile as well, placing 15th at 15:14.69.
The 200 back finals were up next with Zach Poti on the starting block in the championship heat. His time of 1:39.31 was less than three tenths of a second off of the setting the ASU record in the event. He raked in 17 points to the team total with his second place finish, adding to his 100 back conference title from yesterday evening.
Carter Swift took the top mark in the preliminary round of the 100 free this morning, touching the wall at 42.05 in the finals for second place. His place was the highest ever for the Aussie at the Pac-12 Championship as he transferred to Arizona State last season.
Jack Kucharczyk and Aaron Beauchamp stepped up next in the consolation final of the 200 breast, placing 13th and 15th, respectively.
Freshman Alex Colson followed in the championship final of the 200 fly, taking home eighth place at 1:45.58. Jack Edgemond finished in 10th place, touching the wall at 1:43.95 in the consolation final.
In the final event of the evening, the ASU relay squad of Swift, Evan Carlson, Cody Bybee and Jack Dolan entered as the No. 1 seed with a time of 2:49.94. The foursome shaved almost two seconds off that time, setting the school record in the 400 free relay with a time of 2:47.24.
"Our 400 free relay posted the 3rd fastest time in the nation while shattering our team record by almost 2 seconds," Bowman said. "We will send our largest contingent to NCAAs in decades and look forward to competing in Indianapolis in a couple weeks."
The Sun Devils will prepare for the National Championship in the coming weeks with qualifiers expected to be announced next week. Fans can keep up with the action all season long by following @ASUSwimDive on Twitter.
