TEMPE, Ariz. – Arizona State Lacrosse lost a home game for the first time this season, falling to No. 25 Stanford 17-6 on Sunday afternoon at Sun Devil Soccer/Lacrosse Stadium.
The play of Berkeley Bonneau early in the game had a season-high crowd on its feet, as the goalkeeper made eight of her 10 saves in the first eight minutes of the game. The outstanding play of the redshirt junior kept the Sun Devils close early.
"Berkeley was great," Coach McCormack remarked. "She was the backbone all day and saw the ball well, which kept us in it early."
The Sun Devils (5-3, 1-1) struggled to generate offense in the first half against a talented Stanford defense, with the Cardinal jumping out to a 12-1 lead after 30 mintues. Coach McCormack managed to settle his team down at halftime, as Arizona State came out competing in the second half.
"We needed to re-group," Coach McCormack recalled. "I told them to relax, play our game, and focus on the things we can control."
The message was received as the Maroon & Gold put together a much-improved second half effort. ASU went toe-to-toe with No. 25 Stanford in the final half, matching their second half goal output (5).
"We wanted to exceed their intensity over the final 30 minutes. They did that for the most part. There were certain things in the second half as well that we could get better on. We are going to learn from it and move forward."
Katie Brodsky was a bright spot for the offense, scoring two of the six goals. Coming off the bench to provide a late spark was Kate Dougherty, who recorded both a goal and an assist as the Sun Devils scored the final three goals of the game. Despite the loss, Coach McCormack and the team are ready to get back to work before hosting USC on Friday at 1 pm.
"We are going to focus on our draw controls and clearing the ball," Coach McCormack mentioned. "We have to continue to do the other things that we have done well since day one. Can't wait to get back together to start enjoying the process again."
