Eugene, Or. --- No. 19 Sun Devil women's tennis (11-5) walked away with a sweep against Oregon 4-0 in their first Pac-12 conference match of the season Friday afternoon.
"I thought we came out in both singles and doubles and competed and played well," said head coach Sheila McInerney. "Unfortunately for Oregon they had a couple of their players out of the lineup due to injury and to our credit we took advantage of it. Sammi, Lauryn and Savannah finished quickly so that was great. It's nice to start the Pac-12 season with a road win which is never easy to do."
On court two of doubles, seniors Savannah Slaysman and Sammi Hampton set the tone with a 6-2 win. No. 46 doubles pairing Tereza Kolarova and Ilze Hattingh claimed the doubles point for the Sun Devils in a 6-3 victory.
Cali Jankowski and Lauryn John-Baptiste went unfinished on court 3.
With the momentum from doubles, ASU went into singles with confidence starting off with quick sets for No. 94 Hampton on court 2, No. 120 Savannah Slaysman on 5 and Lauryn John-Baptiste on court 6.
Hampton swept her opponent Uxia Martinez Moral 6-0 in both sets, finishing first for the Sun Devils. Quickly following Hampton was Slaysman who went 6-1 on both of her sets against Madisen Olsen.
After a five match stint of losing, Lauryn John-Baptiste broke out of her streak with a win over Taryn Fujimori to claim the final singles point for the Devils. She swept Fujimori in the first set and only allowed one point in the second set.
Courts 1, 3 and 4 went unfinished.
The Sun Devils will return to Tempe for their last non-conference match on Tuesday, March 10 at noon MST.
