FEDERAL WAY, Wash. – No. 10 Sun Devil men's swimming finished up day one of the 2020 Pac-12 Men's Swimming Championships. The men raced to a podium finish in the 800 free relay and set the school record in the process.
"We are off to a great start in this meet," coach Bob Bowman said. "Our 800 relay broke the school record by over 2 seconds and our time trials were all lifetime bests."
Jack Dolan, Carter Swift, Liam Bresette and Cody Bybee combined to take second in the event, touching the wall at 6:12.17 to break the Arizona State record. They shattered the previous record by two seconds set in 2019.
The 400 medley relay followed, with Zach Poti, Elijah Warren, Evan Carlson and Swift competing for ASU. Poti put the Sun Devils ahead early, swimming the fastest 100 back split among the 11 relays at 44.93. ASU finished with a time of 3:04.54, but were disqualified due to an early takeoff.
"Zach Poti tied his school record leading off the 400 medley but we were unfortunately disqualified for an early takeoff," Bowman said. "These things happen when you are competing hard and going head to head with the National Champions. I couldn't be prouder of our boys and look forward to a great day tomorrow."
The Sun Devils are back in action tomorrow morning for the preliminary rounds of the 500 free, 200 IM and 50 free events. The morning prelims begin at 12 p.m. MST while the finals are set to begin at 7 p.m. MST.
