TEMPE, Ariz. – Sun Devil Women's Golf's Linn Grant received an invitation to the 2020 Arnold Palmer Cup, as she was announced as one of six international female Rankings Selections on Golf Channel this morning.
Grant will compete in the Ryder Cup-style international collegiate event between the United States and International Team. By virtue of finishing third in the Palmer Cup International female rankings, Grant was one of six golfers invited to join the Committee Selections to complete the team. Grant will have the opportunity to compete in Europe, as the 2020 edition will be held at Lahinch Golf Club in Lahinch, Ireland. The event is slated to run July 3-5, but organizers recognize that the matches may have to be postponed or canceled.
The Viken, Sweden native becomes the second Sun Devil to earn a spot on the female International team, joining teammate Olivia Mehaffey, who was announced as one of six female committee selections earlier in the month. Grant and Mehaffey make Arizona State one of only two schools with multiple female International competitors, joined by Stanford. A total of three Sun Devils will be competing in the event, with Sun Devil Men's Golf freshman David Puig also a part of the International side as one of 6 additional male Committee Selections.
"We are thrilled to have two terrific Sun Devils make the Palmer Cup International squad along with their men's team teammate David Puig," Coach Missy Farr-Kaye remarked. "It is such a great accomplishment and to have both Olivia and Linn make the team is very special. We are hopeful that the Palmer Cup will go on as planned this summer."
On the Women's International side, Grant and Mehaffey will be joined by Emma Spitz (UCLA/Austria), Kaleigh Telfer (Auburn/South Africa), Aline Krauter (Stanford/Germany), Sophie Guo (Texas/China), Ingrid Lindblad (LSU/Sweden), Pauline Roussin-Bouchard (South Carolina/France), Hazel MacGarvie (Stirling/Scotland), Vivian Hou (Arizona/Taiwan), Angelina Ye (Stanford/China), and Sofia Garcia (Texas Tech/Paraguay).
The prestigious honor comes on the heels of Grant ending her freshman season on a high note, capturing her first collegiate Individual Title at the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational. Despite having to complete 36 holes on day one, Grant remained consistent, finishing under par in all three rounds. She shot a 209 (-7), defeating TCU's Sabrina Iqbal in a five-hole playoff to claim the Individual Title. Grant's performance was a big reason why the Sun Devils were able to dominate the event, winning the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational Team Championship by a 19-stroke margin. On a challenging golf course, no other team finished below par, with 12 of the 16 teams finishing 886 (+22) or worse. However, Grant had little trouble with the conditions, as she was the lone golfer in the field of 92 to record multiple rounds in the 60s.
She put the finishing touches on one of the best freshman seasons in program history. Despite her inexperience at the collegiate level, she played with a consistency and maturity beyond her years, helping her land on the ANNIKA Award Watch List as one of 15 candidates for National Player of the Year. Among some of the strongest fields that women's collegiate golf has to offer, Grant finished in the Top-10 at five of her seven tournaments. In six of those seven tournaments, she carded a score under par. Grant put together 11 total rounds under par, giving her an incredible 71.04 stroke average. She was slotted at No. 8 in the final Golfstat Women's Individual Rankings, having never finished behind a golfer ranked in the 26-100 range (51-0). Grant accomplished plenty in the abbreviated season, generating excitement around what the future holds for the Sun Devil freshman.
