FEDERAL WAY, Wash. – Youssef Selim took the springboard for day one of the Zone E Championships, competing in the three-meter springboard today. Selim earned his fourth-straight bid in four years in three-meter, taking first in the finals this morning.
"I'm proud of Youssef today for a couple reasons, first because he established right out of the gate that he's taking care of his business by taking a NCAA qualifying spot," coach Mark Bradshaw said. "Now all he needs to do is place in the top-12 of one-meter and platform, but we know he'll be in the top-four for sure."
Selim has competed in three meter in all four years he has spent as a Sun Devil, earning bids to compete in three meter and platform during his freshman year and then all three events during his sophomore and junior years.
The Egyptian took fourth place in the preliminary round this morning, taking home a score of 391.20 to do so. The score earned him a chance to compete in the final round.
He came back in the final round firing, finishing with a career high of 425.00 to take first place in the event. Selim took first place in three-meter last season as well, eclipsing his last season's score of 394.10 by over 30 points. The score was also a personal best for Selim.
"It's nice to have that under your hat as you proceed through the rest of the competition," Bradshaw said. "He bounced back from Pac-12s because he just wasn't on his "A" game there. It gives him a little confidence coming back."
Selim is back in action tomorrow morning for the preliminary round of the one-meter springboard. Fans can keep up with the action all season long by following @ASUSwimDive on Twitter.
