DAVIS, Calif. – The Sun Devil Lacrosse team opened up the 2020 season with a 16-12 road victory at UC Davis on Saturday afternoon at UC Davis Health Stadium.
Arizona State (1-0) gets the win in the debut of first-year Head Coach Tim McCormack, displaying the aggressive and relentless playing style that the new coaching staff has brought to Tempe.
"It was a full team effort from the first whistle until the end," Coach McCormack observed. "That was something that we preached, so it was good to see it come to fruition."
Four different Sun Devils put together multi-goal performances with a total of eight individuals scoring at least once. The balanced offensive attack was spearheaded by a pair of returning All-Conference honorees. Redshirt senior attacker Kerri Clayton picked up right where she left off last season, scoring a game-high four goals while dishing out two assists. Junior attacker Emily Glagolev looked to be in midseason form, as she finished with five points (three goals & two assists).
"Overall, solid team effort and I am really proud of the way everyone was able to contribute today," Coach McCormack remarked. "We saw a balance scoring sheet with a lot of contributors."
Arizona State came up with an answer every time UC Davis cut into the lead, showing the type of resiliency that the coaching staff has emphasized in the offseason.
HOW IT HAPPENED
"It means a lot," stated Coach McCormack in reference to his first victory. "It is nice to get the first one, but we going to get right back to work. We will savor it for the rest of this day, but it is over tomorrow and time to move forward and have our eyes set on the next one out in Detroit. We will work on focusing on one day at a time, as we have since the first day we got together in August."
UP NEXT
The Sun Devils continue their four-game road trip to start the season next weekend, as they head to the Midwest for a pair of matchups. On Friday, February 14 at 11 am the Sun Devils will face off with Detroit Mercy for the first time in school history.
Following the game with the Titans, Arizona State prepares for their toughest challenge of the non-conference schedule, which provides a unique storyline. Former Northwestern Assistant Coach Tim McCormack leads Arizona State into Evanston to take on the Wildcats on Sunday, February 16 at 11 am.
"Making the trip to Northwestern will be a great experience for our program," Coach McCormack mentioned. "It is an opportunity for us to compare ourselves with one of the most talented teams in the country."

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Sun Devil offense came out clicking on all cylinders, as it did not take long for Kerri Clayton to make her presence felt. Clayton registered a goal 30 seconds in, just missing the Sun Devil record for quickest goal to start a game by eight seconds.
- A little over a minute later, Emma Carlson found the back of the net, scoring her second career goal.
- Clayton answered an Aggie goal with one of her own, giving her two goals in just over five minutes.
- After UC Davis evened the game at three, the Sun Devils came up with four consecutive unanswered goals to give them a lead that they would never give back.
- The first of those four scores came courtesy of Anna Winkeler, as the freshman attacker recorded her first collegiate goal.
- A pair of midfielders teamed up for the next goal, as Paige McGlothlin converted off a Maria Villanti feed to put the Sun Devils up 5-3 with 13:42 left in the first half.
- Kylie Kroeger wasted no time adding to the lead, with a goal less than 30 seconds later.
- What would be the beginning of a productive afternoon, Carley Adams made it a 4-0 run to give ASU a 7-3 lead with 12:26 left in the first half.
- As the pace slowed down, Emily Glagolev scored the final goal of the half as the Sun Devils entered the break up 8-5. They held the Aggies scoreless over the final 6:12 seconds of the half.
- Both teams took some time to find their footing in the second half, with Carley Adams' second goal of the game putting the Sun Devils up 9-6 with 22:48 remaining in the game.
- A back-and-forth finish ensued, with Arizona State countering every Aggies comeback attempt.
- Kerri Clayton was one of the Sun Devils providing plenty of answers, as her goal with 20:25 left gave her a hat trick.
- After another Aggies' goal cut the lead to 10-8, Emily Glagolev decided to take over. The junior found the back of the net on two consecutive opportunities, with Clayton and Maddy Hunter facilitating the attacks.
- Adding one more for good measure, Kerri Clayton showed she wasn't done yet. She recorded her fourth goal of the game, which represented the difference in the 13-9 score.
- In a game full of goals for the star attacker, Clayton still managed to find open teammates. She threaded a pass to Olivia Hood, who knew exactly what to do with it, as she scored her second career goal.
- Carley Adams became the third Sun Devil to record a hat trick on the afternoon, giving ASU it's largest lead to that point (five goals).
- The second goal of the day by Anna Winkeler all but sealed the Arizona State victory, as the freshman put her team on top 16-10.
- A combination of excellent defense and solid goalkeeping by the goalkeeper took it from there, as the Sun Devils clinched a 16-12 victory.
- With her four-goal output, Kerri Clayton now has nine 4+ goal performances in her Sun Devil career.
- Clayton's goal 30 seconds into the game was the second-fastest in school history.
- Maura Cissel was outstanding in the draw circle, earning a career-high six draw controls.
- "Maura Cissel had a great day played a ton of minutes taking the draw and on the defensive side," Coach McCormack stated.
- Pressure defense caused 8 Aggies' turnovers, as UC Davis committed a total of 24 turnovers.
- "I thought the defense looked tight, giving up the shots we wanted for the most part," Coach McCormack mentioned. "They came up with some key ground balls."
- "Kristina Coppinger and Olivia Kroah did well down low for us as well, getting out on the ball when we needed pressure," Coach McCormack commented. "Mallory Martel was solid did a great job reading the offense and communicating."
- Emma Carlson and Olivia Hood each registered their second collegiate goal.
- "Olivia Hood was great on the offensive side of the ball from our mid unit and I felt like we had great contributions from them all in some form or another which was great," Coach McCormack complimented.
- Freshman Anna Winkeler not only scored her first collegiate goal, she added another later in the game.
- After scoring 70 points in 17 games last season, the Sun Devils held UC Davis star Amanda Outcalt to only one point (assist).
- Carley Adams recorded her first-career hat trick and fourth multi-goal performance.
- Goalkeeper Berkeley Bonneau made several crucial saves to build momentum for the Sun Devils. Six of the 12 UC Davis goals came from free-position attempts.
- "Berk was great in the cage for us made some big time plays breaking up their offense and had a few key ground balls," Coach McCormack added.
- Sun Devil Lacrosse moves to 3-0 all-time in season openers.
"It means a lot," stated Coach McCormack in reference to his first victory. "It is nice to get the first one, but we going to get right back to work. We will savor it for the rest of this day, but it is over tomorrow and time to move forward and have our eyes set on the next one out in Detroit.
