TEMPE, Ariz. – The Sun Devil Lacrosse team opened their 2020 home slate with a 18-14 victory over Marquette, Thursday afternoon at Sun Devil Soccer/Lacrosse Stadium.
"It feels good to be home," Coach McCormack remarked after the win. "We put a lot of hard work in here dating back to the first days in August. To have it all come together, at the place that you have put that work in, it is awesome. Very exciting for the team and hopefully we can build off of it."
"The two things that we talk about on the defensive end are discipline and control," Coach McCormack commented. "When you see 18 eight-meters attempts and 39 fouls, you question that a little bit. We will go back to the tape on that and make sure we square that stuff away. Sometimes you find yourself on that side of it and you have overcome. We were able to do that."
Attacker Kerri Clayton once again played a major role in the Sun Devil offense, which came into the game leading the Pac-12 Conference in scoring (17.50 goals/game). She helped improve that total this afternoon, scoring at least five goals and recording at least seven points for the second consecutive game. She has made the most of her senior season, already sitting at 28 points only five games into the season.
Clayton got plenty of help on the offensive end, as the Sun Devils received contributions throughout the roster. Emily Glagolev put together yet another three-assist performance, adding two goals to give her an incredible 26 points in five games. Anna Winkeler continues a brilliant start to her freshman campaign, finishing with a career-high five points (three goals & two assists). Katie Brodsky provided a scoring spark off the bench yet again, finishing with a career-high four points. She found the back of the net twice, one of the highlight-reel variety, while also dishing out two assists. Carley Adams was one of three Sun Devils with a hat trick, needing less than 20 minutes of game time to complete the feat.
Coming into the game, Marquette was 13th in the country with 16.6 draw controls/game. The significance of this aspect of the game was stressed to the players throughout the week in practice. Adjustments made by the coaching staff to the draw control unit paid dividends in the second half, as ASU won the battle over the final 30 minutes. Coach McCormack was pleased with his team's second-half effort in that area.
"It was huge," Coach McCormack exclaimed when asked about his team's ability to win the draw control battle in the second half. "Great three-player effort and it started with Glag (Emily Glagolev). She did a really nice job of digging the ball out of the stick and placing it where it needed to be. Her teammates did great boxing-out and creating lanes, allowing either her to run on it or one of our guys. That has been a major point of emphasis for us in the last week and a half. I was very happy to see that group come together."
The steady play in net of Berkeley Bonneau was crucial to creating separation in the second half. The redshirt junior did not let the Golden Eagles' 18 free-position attempts affect her game. She made several spectacular saves on shots from close range, showing off her athleticism and poise. In addition to the nine goals from eight-meter attempts, Marquette scored twice on the man advantage. Bonneau allowed only three goals at even strength during her 12-save performance.
