COLUMBUS, Ohio --- No. 24 Sun Devil women's tennis (9-4) started strong in doubles but fell to No. 6 Ohio State Sunday afternoon 5-0 at Varsity Tennis Center, ending their three-match winning streak.
"Tough match for sure but credit Ohio State for playing a very solid match," said head coach Sheila McInerney. "They played well from top to bottom in both singles and doubles and were the better team today. I know we will take some positives from the weekend and work on certain things that we struggled with today.";
ASU doubles pair Cali Jankowski and Savannah Slaysman defeated Shiori Fukuda and Luna Dormet 6-3 to begin the doubles competition. On court three, Ohio State led the charge with Lauryn John-Baptiste and Sammi Hampton unable to recover, dropping their match 6-3. With court 1 left to decide the doubles point, Ilze Hattingh and Tereza Kolarova fell short against No. 53 Kolie Allen and Irina Cantos Siemers, 6-4.
The Sun Devils remained unphased by the defeats in doubles and headed into singles. On court three, Tereza Kolarova battled with Isabelle Boulais, but ultimately was defeated 6-2, 6-3 in the match.
On court one, OSU's Shiori Fukuda -- ranked No. 11 in singles -- won in straight sets over No. 38 Ilze Hattingh, 6-1, 6-3.
The 54th-ranked singles player, Irina Cantos Siemers, was on court five and clinched the match with the Buckeyes' fourth point, 6-3, 6-2, over John-Baptiste.
Ending nearly simultaneously, redshirt freshman Cali Jankowski pushed Allen in the first set to set point before dropping the tiebreaker 7-4. She attempted a comeback on the second set, but was unable to do so.
Courts 2 and 6 went unfinished in Columbus.
ASU will return home Feb. 29 for a doubleheader against Texas Tech and Cal Poly at Whiteman Tennis Center. The first match against the Red Raiders is set for 11 a.m. MST followed by a 3 p.m. MST match vs. Cal Poly.
