SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Arizona State Lacrosse dropped a back-and-forth battle with San Diego State, 19-18, Thursday afternoon at Aztec Lacrosse Stadium.
The Sun Devils (2-2) fought off several Aztec rallies, taking the lead on multiple occasions, but were unable to withstand a late push by the home team over the final 48 seconds. Kerri Clayton put on a show offensively, compiling a game-high nine points and attempting to will her team to victory. Arizona State remained in the game partially due to the heroics of Berkeley Bonneau, who not only finished with 14 saves, including six coming on Aztec free-position attempts.
"We saw some solid individual efforts today," Head Coach Tim McCormack remarked. "It was nice to see a lot of people putting the ball into the net for us."
The theme of a balanced attack continued for the Arizona State offense, as they received contributions throughout the roster. A total of nine different Sun Devils scored at least one goal, with four record multi-goal games. Emily Glagolev stuffed the stat sheet yet again, totaling six points behind the strength of her fifth consecutive performance with three or more assists dating back to last season. Maddy Hunter produced the third hat trick of her career, all of which came in the second half. In a game that featured seven lead changes, the Aztecs prevailed thanks to 11 second half goals.
"We need to stay disciplined down the stretch as a couple mistakes hurt us. We will learn from this one and move forward."

HOW IT HAPPENED
- In the previous two meetings, the Sun Devils had outscored the Aztecs by a combined 26-25 margin. Another back-and-forth battle developed between the two sides, as both teams experienced momentum swings.
- Despite being on the tail-end of a four-road road trip, Arizona State got off to another fast start. The visitors were up 3-0 with 27:33 left in the first half.
- Kaylon Buckner got the Sun Devils on the board from free-position, with Kerri Clayton doing the same less than two minutes later.
- Anna Winkeler made it four consecutive games with a goal to start her collegiate career, scoring off a feed from Kerri Clayton.
- San Diego State would respond with a run of their own, tallying four consecutive goals to take their first lead with 19:45 left in the first half.
- Coming back to haunt her hometown team, San Diego native Kylie Kroeger would provide a response for the Sun Devils. She evened the game back up at four on a goal assisted by Emily Glagolev.
- Kroeger would do the assisting on Arizona State's next two goals, first feeding a cutting Carley Adams to put the Maroon & Gold back on top. Kroeger would also get credited with the assist on Kerri Clayton's second goal, putting ASU up two at the 14:09 mark of the first half.
- The back-and-forth nature of the game continued, as San Diego State answered with two goals of their own to tie the game at six. Berkeley Bonneau came through with several crucial saves on free-position attempts, keeping the Aztecs from building momentum.
- Kerri Clayton would take over from there, serving as the focal point of the Sun Devil offense this afternoon. She assisted on Carley Adams' second goal of the game prior to scoring the next two goals, giving her four goals before halftime and Arizona State a three-goal lead.
- The Sun Devils managed to answer two goals from the Aztecs with one of their own, as Olivia Hood scored her second goal of the season to give her team a 10-8 lead at the half.
- San Diego State came out motivated after trailing at halftime, scoring the first four goals of the second half to take a 12-10 lead with 22:03 remaining in the game.
- Coach McCormack's squad was not phased by this brief spurt, as they remained composed and attempted to regain the momentum.
- Maddy Hunter would represent the spark the Sun Devils needed, as she scored from the free-position to cut the lead to one. After another Aztec goal, Hunter once again was able to respond, finishing on a perfectly-placed shot from a tough angle to make it 13-12 Aztecs.
- Hunter's goal was the first of a mini 3-0 run, as shortly after Lia Willis sped through the defense and found Emily Glagolev to re-tie the game at 13.
- Kerri Clayton would get the lead back via free-position, as she was impossible to stop when given eight-meter opportunities this afternoon.
- As was typical for the style of this game, the Aztecs took the lead back with two straight goals.
- Luckily for the Sun Devils, they have the services of a pair of Pac-12 All-Conference players in Emily Glaoglev and Kerri Clayton. The duo teamed up for the next two goals, with Glagolev scoring first before Clayton put ASU back ahead, 16-15.
- The Maroon & Gold appeared to be in the driver's seat after Emily Glagolev found Katie Brodsky for her second goal of the season, extending the lead to 17-15 with 4:22 left.
- San Diego State had one last run in them that was too much for the Sun Devils to overcome, as the home team scored four of the last five goals to capture a 19-18 victory in an instant classic.
- For the third time in her career, Kerri Clayton finished with 6 or more goals in a game. She is the only Sun Devil to have accomplished the feat. Her nine-point performance was the second-highest of her career.
- Clayton now has hat tricks in all four games to start the 2020 season.
- Emily Glagolev compiled six points (two goals & four assists), her fourth consecutive game with at least four points to start the season.
- Glagolev now has 13 consecutive multi-point games, compiling 52 points during that span.
- She now has 18 career multi-assist performances and 16 career multi-goal outings.
- Berkeley Bonneau showed flashes of brilliance during her 14-save outing, the 23rd double digit save performance of her career.
- Bonneau also collected a season and team-high eight ground balls, the second-highest total of her career.
- Maddy Hunter put together her third career hat trick, with all three goals coming during a 10-minute span in the second half.
- Carley Adams recorded multiple goals for the third time in four games this season, after having only three such performances in 24 games played prior to 2020.
- Kylie Kroeger continued to haunt her hometown Aztecs, as the San Diego native had three more points, giving her seven career points against SDSU.
- Katie Brodsky provided a spark late in the game with a goal and an assist, recording her second multi-point effort this season.
