ASU returns for the 29th annual Hawaii tournament, as it took home team honors in 2015 and 1995 while Todd Demsey (1995), Chris Hanell (1996), Jesper Kennegard (2009) earned medalist honors. In 2018 sophomore Alex del Rey notched his third top-10 finish in five events on the year. In 2017 the squad finished fourth behind champion Texas Tech, USC and Oregon. ASU made the push to fourth after being tied for seventh to start the day by posting the best final round of any team in the field. Freshman Chun (Kevin) An Yu had an impressive first collegiate tournament, as the twelfth ranked amateur in the world finished 6-under and tied for 20th.
THE LINEUP: ASU's lineup will include seniors Chun An Yu, Blake Wagoner, and Alex del Rey. Junior Mason Andersen and freshman David Puig, who made his Sun Devil debut last week, are also in the lineup for ASU. Freshman Ryggs Johnston will contend as an individual.
"(David) Puig comes with lots of accolades and tournament wins and expectations. I think the big thing for us is to not overdo that," says Sun Devil head coach Matt Thurmond. "Let him come in like Ryggs just did and find his way with time. Ryggs (Johnston) has been such a nice surprise. We knew he was a great recruit. We knew he'd be a great player."
GOLFWEEK RANKINGS: Arizona State (17), Auburn (11), Cal State Northridge (166), Colorado (87), Georgia Tech (2), Hawaii at Hilo, Hawaii at Manoa, Oklahoma State (44), Oregon (93), Oregon State (26), Osaka Gakuin, Pacific (205), Pepperdine (4), San Jose State (65), Stanford (28), TCU (76), Texas (10), Texas Tech (3), UC Davis (86), and USC (41) complete the field of 20 for this tournament.
