SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The No. 3 Sun Devil (13-0, 3-1 Pac-12) wrestling team pulled out front early and never let up as the team secured its first shutout win since 2012, a 43-0 victory over Cal Poly on Saturday night at the Robert A. Mott Center.
The conference matchup featured six bonus-point wins by the Sun Devils, including three-straight wins at 133, 141 and 149 for the first time since facing McKendree back in November. Saturday night's win marked the largest margin of victory over the Mustangs in series history as the two programs met for the first time back in 1964.
Brandon Courtney continued to do what he has done all season long - take care of business right out of the gate and build a lead early. Out of the first period, Courtney would supply six takedowns and one four-point near fall to put things out of reach as he picked up tech fall No. 4 and moved his win-streak to nine matches - second best to Zahid Valencia.
At 133, Josh Kramer tallied his first victory since November. He would tack on four points to the team score with a major decision over Cole Reyes - the third major of the season for the Buckeye native.
Back-to-back decision wins from Cory Crooks (141) and Josh Maruca (149) would follow, increasing ASU's lead to 15-0. The decision victory for Crooks is the first since mid-November while Maruca also found the win column for first time since the beginning of December as the two will look to ride the momentum into the final stretch of the season.
First half of action ended with freshman Jacori Teemer adding another technical fall to his resume, marking his third in the last four matches. Josh Shields made the score 22-0 after picking up a decision win over Bernie Truax.
Two-straight pins from Anthony Valencia and Austin Clayton continued a Sun Devil surge as Valencia quickly put Cal Poly's Dylan Miricle to his back and received the fall in a team best 31 seconds. Clayton was fast to the punch as well, while also earning a couple milestones on the night as he picked up his first dual win in an ASU singlet and first career pin, doing so in 2:37
At 197, Kordell Norfleet was faced with another top-15 opponent in No. 12 Tom Lane. In a battle between two of the best at their respective weight class in the Pac-12, Norfleet pulled a late go-ahead reversal in the final two minutes of the third period to give him the 8-5 victory.
At heavyweight, Cal Poly pleaded no contest as Tanner Hall received the forfeit victory and the Sun Devils saw their record improve to 13-1.
Next up, the Devils will head to Bakersfield tomorrow to compete in its last Pac-12 matchup of the regular season. Action gets underway at 1 p.m. MST while fans will have the chance to stream the match live at https://gorunners.com/watch/?Live=4&type=Live.
