Sun Devils Split Up for Meets in Iowa, New Mexico

Sun Devils Split Up for Meets in Iowa, New MexicoSun Devils Split Up for Meets in Iowa, New Mexico
TEMPE – For the first time in 2020, the Sun Devil track and field team will split into two groups to tackle a pair of meets in New Mexico and Iowa as a small group of Devils head to the Don Kirby Elite in Albuquerque and the Iowa State Classic in Ames.

The races in the great state of Iowa will mark a homecoming for two Sun Devils in Jackson and Erika Lewis. The siblings from West Des Moines will take on stacked fields of distance runners at the Lied Recreation Center as Jackson will run in the 3,000 and Erika will be one of four Sun Devils entered in a deep women's mile.

Joining Erika in the women's mile will be Bianca Tinoco, whose mile at the McCravy Memorial was two seconds off of a spot in the top-10 in program history.

Fearghal Curtin will get another chance to break the four-minute barrier in the mile as he goes up against a field containing four sub-four men and 10 others within four seconds of the milestone. Freshman cross country standout Vincent Mauri is scheduled to make his indoor debut for ASU in the 5,000-meter run Friday as well.

Back out West in Albuquerque, Cortney Jones leads a small group in competition at the Don Kirby Elite.

Jones, who currently sits in a qualifying spot for the NCAA Indoor Championships, will run the 60-meter hurdles one final time in collegiate competition before heading to the MPSF Championships and competing for a conference title at the end of the month.

Turner Washington is set to return to the ring for the first time in two weeks. His week one throw of 20.43m/67-0.5 feet is still top-three in the nation and has the redshirt sophomore comfortably in the top-16 and in position to make his first indoor championship.

On the outside looking in are Josephine Anokye and Tommi Hintnaus, who both put up season and indoor personal best marks at last weekend's meet, but sit outside of qualification.

Anokye ran a 23.61 in the 200 at last weekend's Team Open, but after an altitude adjustment, she finds herself in 33rd on the descending order list. Hintnaus' clearance of 4.14m/13-7.0 also has her in the top-35, but just under four inches off what would be the final qualifying mark.

The action in the Hawkeye State gets started Friday, while the Don Kirby Elite starts Thursday. Both meets can be viewed on FloTrack with a valid subscription, and live results will be available on PTTiming for the Iowa State Classic, and Flash Results for the Don Kirby Elite.

Five Sun Devils to Represent ASU at USA Championships

As the Don Kirby Elite in Albuquerque concludes, five Sun Devils will prepare to compete for national titles at the USA Indoor Track and Field Championships Feb. 14-15 at the ABQ Convention Center.

Along with Turner Washington and Cortney Jones, who will both be competing at the Don Kirby meet, reigning NCAA champion Samantha Noennig, U.S. U21 silver medalist Cole Riddle and All-American Garrett O'Toole will throw, jump and run, respectively, for USA titles.

Riddle and Noennig have both had success at the ABQ Convention Center recently as they both set indoor personal bests within the last two weeks at the venue. Riddle cleared 5.45m/17-10.5 feet in the pole vault to move into the top-10 in the NCAA and into third in program history, and Noennig became the first collegiate woman this year to launch the shot put more than 18 meters.

As for O'Toole, the redshirt senior has yet to make his Sun Devil debut on the track, but was an important piece for the cross country team a year ago. O'Toole will compete in a loaded 1,500-meter field.

The 2020 USA Indoor Track and Field Championships will be broadcast live on the NBC family of networks and results can be found on the USATF website.
