CHICAGO – Arizona State's comeback effort came up short Sunday as the Sun Devils fell to the Virginia Cavaliers 4-3 at the final day of the ITA Indoor National Championships.
The Devils found themselves down early after the Cavaliers snagged two wins in doubles on courts one and three. Jankowski/Slaysman managed to take care of their opponents on court two, 6-3, and would end up carrying that success into singles play.
Freshman Cali Jankowski played another three-setter Sunday, and came away with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 win to help the Sun Devils even things up with the Hoos.
Savannah Slaysman came out firing after her doubles win and downed her opponent 6-2 in the opening set. The Cavalier on the other side of the net didn't want to go away easily, though, and took the Sun Devil senior into a tiebreak to determine a second-set victor. Slaysman wrapped the extra game up quickly, winning 7-6(3).
ASU's other win came from court two senior Sammi Hampton. Like Jankowski, Hampton got off to a great start by winning the opening frame, but her opponent flipped the score on her in the second set to set up a winner-take-all third. Hampton didn't let the momentum stick with Virginia, and cruised to a 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 win.
After a weekend away among the elites of collegiate tennis in Chicago, the Sun Devils return to the comfort of the Whiteman Tennis Center for a home slate against Wichita State on Friday and the Rice Owls on Sunday.
