ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Sun Devil track and field team will get its first look at the 2020 NCAA Indoor Championships venue this weekend as it heads to the Land of Enchantment for the New Mexico Team Invitational.
The trip to the ABQ Convention Center will also give the Sun Devil sprinters their first races on a banked track this season.
On oversized flat tracks, the Devils have fared well thus far with Josephine Anokye owning a top-35 time after only one 200-meter race, and Arius Williams has the third-fastest 400-meter time by a freshman in the nation.
Newcomer and six-time All-American Cortney Jones already owns one of the fastest times in the nation and in school history (8.15) in the 60-meter hurdles, but she'll get a chance to bring her time closer to the school-record of 8.09 seconds.
ASU's throwers get back into action in Albuquerque after sitting out last weekend's visit to Kentucky. Turner Washington will look to regain his national lead in the shot put after slipping to No. 2 during his off week. Defending champion Samantha Noennig comes into the weekend at fifth in the nation in the women's shot put and has the second-best mark by any competitor in Albuquerque this weekend.
With Myka Steinbeisser and Sevanna Hanson's clearance of 3.90m/12-9.50 feet a week ago, there are now five active Sun Devils on ASU's top-10 pole vault lists. Tommi Hintnaus holds the fifth-best women's vault in history, Michael Chadwick sits at eighth on the men's side and Cole Riddle ranks fifth. All five of the record-chasing Devils will lace up this weekend to get the competition started.
The 2020 New Mexico Team Invitational will get going Saturday morning at 8:45 with the men's and women's pole vault. The track will open up at 11 and the FloTrack stream will begin shortly after.
