KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – No. 25 Sun Devil men's tennis' comeback fell short as they dropped their match with No. 14 Oklahoma State, 4-3, Sunday morning at the Goodfriend Tennis Center.
The Cowboys took the first doubles match to the tune of a 6-2 win on court two, however, ASU was able to take wins on the remaining two courts in order the clinch the first point. The freshmen tandem of Christian Lerby/George Stoupe took a 6-4 win on court three. The win is the second on the season for the duo.
No. 27 Tim Ruehl/Andrea Bolla notched an upset win to clinch the doubles point, battling to a 7-6 (5) win over No. 19 Emile Hudd/Luke Hammond to put ASU up 1-0 heading into singles.
Stoupe walked off the court first in singles, taking a quick 6-4, 6-2 win on court five. The Cowboys didn't give up there, as they took three-straight wins on courts one, four and six to go up 3-2.
The match came down to Lerby and Bolla, with both playing in back and forth matches. Both men dropped their first sets and then took their second to force a match-deciding third set. Lerby staked a 4-0 lead in his final set and transferred that into an eventual 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 victory.
With the overall score tied at three, Bolla found himself down 2-5 in his final set. The Italian took a game point to make it 3-5, but eventually fell 3-6, 7-6 (7), 3-6.
The Sun Devils are back in action next weekend as they welcome the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks into the Whiteman Tennis Center. Admission is free and fans can keep up with the action all season long by following @SunDevilMTennis on Twitter.
