VICTORIA, British Columbia – Sun Devil Women's Golf senior Olivia Mehaffey continues her preparation for the 2019-20 season, currently competing for the 2019 Astor Trophy at the Royal Colwood Golf Club beginning today and running through September 1.

The Astor Trophy is a unique female amateur golf tournament, allowing individuals the opportunity to represent their country and play at one of the top international courses. The Royal Colwood Golf Club is one of the select courses that has earned the Royal designation, receiving it from King George V in 1931.

Mehaffey was an automatic pick for the Great Britain & Ireland team based on being one of the top two ranked females from their respective countries in the World Amateur Golf Rankings. She was ranked 16th in the World at the time of selection.

Competing internationally is nothing new for the Sun Devil star, as Mehaffey was on the 2018 Women's Arnold Palmer Cup International Team last summer. She was also a member of the Great Britain & Ireland Curtis Cup team in both 2016 & 2018.

The competition is held once every four years between teams from Australia, Canada, Great Britain & Ireland, New Zealand and South Africa. Each country is represented by 4 female players with each side facing off in foursomes and singles match play in a round robin format.

Two matches are played each day, with the tournament taking place over the span of five days (Aug. 28 – Sept. 1). Each match is contested in one day, with foursomes scheduled for the morning session before singles get underway in the afternoon.

The winner of the match receives 1 point, while in a tied match each side receives ½ point. The Trophy is awarded to the side with the most points accumulated at the end of the fifth day. In the event of a tie the winner is decided by the number of victories in individual matches, including a half point for each halved match. If the teams are still even after implementing the deciding tiebreaker, then the event ends in a tie.

Mehaffey will be the lone representative from Ireland, as her teammates Alice Hewson, Lily May Humphreys, and Emily Toy all hail from England. The event was formerly known as the Commonwealth Trophy, but the name of the event was changed in 2007 to The Astor Trophy to allow players from Ireland to compete for a combined Great Britain & Ireland team.

Recently ranked in the preseason Top-10 by Golfweek and Golf Channel, Arizona State's season kicks-off September 16-18, when they compete in the ANNIKA Intercollegiate presented by 3M. Mehaffey returns for her senior season after a brilliant junior season in which she won the Pac-12 Individual Championship and earned Co-Medalist honors at the Norman Regional. For the latest updates, information, and results for Sun Devil Women's Golf throughout the season, be sure to follow our social media accounts (@SunDevilWLax) or visit our website TheSunDevils.com.
