TEMPE – Although the 2019 collegiate track and field season concluded in mid-June when two programs hoisted trophies in Austin, Texas, at the NCAA Championships, a handful of current and former Sun Devils found success at national and international competitions deep into the summer.
Of the former Devils running away with medals, Shelby Houlihan added two more U.S. titles to her illustrious trophy cabinet, bringing her total now to 11 American crowns since she won her first gold in 2017.
Houlihan's double started by defending her title in the women's 1,500-meter run. She used one of her signature kicks on the final lap of the race to hold off Olympic bronze medalist and 1,500-meter world champion Jenny Simpson to take the U.S. title.
The next day, Houlihan made history in her home state of Iowa when she won her third-straight U.S. 5,000-meter title to become the first woman since Marla Runyan (2001-2003) to win three consecutive 5,000-meter golds at U.S. Championships.
By winning both titles, and having previously run a qualifying mark for the 2019 World Championships, Houlihan will represent the United States in Doha, Qatar, next month to seek out a world medal.
North of the border in Canada, the Sun Devils found success on the track and on the runway as two former All-Americans landed at the top of the podium for their respective events as Canadian champions.
For Christabel Nettey, her title in the long jump was nothing new as the Sun Devil record-holder won her seventh-straight national title.
Nettey's summer continued down in Lima, Peru, where she represented her nation at the Pan America Games in the long jump and took 14th. She'll represent Canada on the international stage again next month in Doha.
While Nettey's Canadian title was her seventh, William Paulson was seeking his first since joining the Canadian Athletics circuit earlier this year.
Despite it being his first time at the Canadian Championships, Paulson entered the competition as one of the favorites and didn't disappoint as he won the 1,500-meter title.
The 2019 Pac-12 Champion went on to don the Canadian kit down in Peru where he landed on the podium yet again and brought home a bronze medal in the 1,500 at the Pan America Games.
Back at the U.S. Championships, Sun Devil great Maggie Ewen punched her ticket to the World Championships when she grabbed bronze in the women's shot put.
Ewen could represent the U.S. in another event as she set a personal best and finished just outside of the automatic qualifying places in the hammer throw. Should U.S. champion DeAnna Price win the 2019 Hammer Challenge and earn that auto-bid, Ewen will be added to the American roster in the hammer throw as well.
Also in the shot put, 2019 NCAA champion Samantha Noennig won the NACAC shot put title and took 10th at the U.S. Championships.
All-American and school record-holder Seri Geisler earned seventh in the women's javelin and redshirt-sophomore Turner Washington grabbed 19th in the shot at USAs, respectively. Washington's throw of 19.31m/63-4.25 feet landed him in the Sun Devil top-10 in the event.
Former Sun Devil team captain and 10,000-meter record-holder John Reniewicki made his U.S. Championship debut in the longest race on the track and took 17th.
Olympian and former Sun Devil Chris Benard finished fourth in the men's triple jump at the U.S. Championships, just missing out on a fourth-straight U.S. medal.
Across the Atlantic, International Devil Fearghal Curtin had a big summer in his home nation of Ireland as he medaled twice at the Irish U23 and Irish Senior Championships.
He got his first medal of the summer when he won the Irish U23 title in the 1,500-meter run. Moving up to the senior level, Curtin was just as impressive as he raced his way to a bronze medal.
Redshirt-sophomore Cerah Moren represented the Philippines at the World University Games in Napoli, Italy, this summer, and redshirt-freshman Shelby Moran took silver at the U.S. U20 Championships in the hammer throw before placing fourth at the U20 Pan America Games.
After wrapping up her collegiate season with a second first-team All-America honor, Beatrice Llano won her national title and competed at the European Team Championships. Representing Norway in the First League of the tiered competition, she finished seventh in the hammer throw.
Llano's year will continue in Doha as she already qualified to represent Norway at the World Championships thanks to her Norwegian record-setting throw from back in March.
The international track and field season will come to a close in late September at the World Championships in Doha. The Sun Devils will have four representatives at the competition, but could add more as the event nears.
