TEMPE, Ariz. / BEIJING, China – On Monday, Sun Devil Hockey departed for China as the first-ever NCAA hockey program to visit the city of Beijing -- one of the world's largest cities.
In a change of events, the Sun Devils will play in the inaugural Renaissance Cup (Fu Xing Cup) with four other teams – one from the KHL and three from the VHL – in the first tournament of its kind. The tournament will be a round-robin format including Kunlun Red Star of the KHL, and KRS-ORG, Tsen Tou Jilin and Ermak Angarsk of the VHL at Aozhong Ice Sports Club.
ASU kicks off the tournament with the opening game on Friday, Aug. 2 against the Kunlun Red Star at 12 a.m. MST/3 p.m. XJT.
Redshirt freshman Peter Zhong will get the opportunity to wear the maroon and gold for the first time in a live game just 10 minutes from where he grew up. Zhong is one of just three NCAA Division I hockey players in the country who are Chinese natives. The forward played for China U18 in the World Junior Championships (D2B) in 2013-14 and 2014-15, followed by Team China at the World Championships (D2A) in 2017-18.
Along with their series of games, the Sun Devils will experience Chinese culture and landmarks, visit the American Embassy and ASU alumni in Beijing, see a Kung Fu show and enjoy a Peking duck dinner.
