TEMPE, Ariz. – For the third-straight year, Arizona State has been awarded the opportunity to host the 2019 Women's Collegiate Triathlon National Championship on Saturday, Nov. 16 at the Tempe Town Lake.

The Sun Devils will have the chance to defend their title for the fourth-straight season after winning the national championship in every season since its inception. Rising junior Hannah Henry also looks to defend her individual title as she aims to take home three-straight in as many years as she has been on campus.

"ASU is thrilled to be hosting the Collegiate National Championships for the third straight year," head coach Cliff English said. "We feel and I know most of my fellow NCAA coaches agree that the Tempe course is challenging, fast, fun, safe, well-organized and truly a perfect venue for a championship event."

Since becoming the first university in the "Power Five" conferences to adopt the NCAA emerging sport of triathlon in 2015, the squad and English have quickly made themselves into a premiere program in just four years' time. The squad took home its first national title in New Orleans with four Sun Devils placing in the top-10 and all five participants within the top 15 spots.

"The 2019 women's collegiate triathlon season is set to be the most competitive yet, as we continue to expand opportunities for female student-athletes with each passing year," Jon Metz, President of the College Triathlon Coaches Association said. "Schools across all three divisions are consistently recruiting individuals who bring not only top-level talent, but also integrity and sportsmanship, to the women's NCAA triathlon family."

The Sun Devils have since brought home two more team national titles as well as two more individual national titles and look to continue to set the standard for the future execution of the championship event.

"I know my team loves this course and we are determined to defend our title this November," English said. "We are excited moving into this third running of the event!"

ASU and the city of Tempe have strong participation and cooperation with the local, regional, and national triathlon community. Tempe possesses a history of hosting several major racing events including Ironman Arizona, Rock 'n' Roll Marathon, and Pat's Run, as well as triathlon-specific events in the 2013 & 2014 National Triathlon Championships for USA Triathlon.

"We look forward to again hosting hundreds of competitors, staff and volunteers for the women's collegiate national championship here in Tempe as we continue to support and promote the surging sport of triathlon," Vice President for University Athletics Ray Anderson said. "The weather and atmosphere on a Saturday in November make for an exciting event with some of the most disciplined athletes on and off the course. It will be another great day for Coach English, his staff and team as we host another championship event of an Olympic sport."

The Sun Devils dominated en route to their national championship victory in 2018, taking all five of the top-5 spots for the first time ever. Henry took home the individual title while Charlotte Ahrens came in a close second. Last season marked the second-straight in which the Sun Devils swept the podium at the event and four of the five athletes – Henry, Ahrens, Kyla Roy and Audrey Ernst – will return to defend team and individual honors.
