TEMPE, Ariz. -- Sun Devil women's triathlon head coach Cliff English announced the elevation of Nicole Welling to an assistant coach role Thursday morning. Welling previously served in the operations department for the sport.
"Nicole has been with our ASU program from the very beginning and I am thrilled that she will continue to be with us in her new role of assistant coach. I believe she will have an incredible contribution to the program immediately. The future is luminous!"
Welling has been a part of the program since its infancy, and was responsible for writing a draft of the proposal leading to USA Triathlon's grant awarded to ASU in order to fund the program. She has been involved in every step regarding triathlon at Arizona State including hiring a head coach, helping the team's assigned Development Officer to raise funds for equipment, and organizing and planning the first official visit for triathlon student-athletes at ASU.
Welling also raced triathlon starting in 2012 - she competed in many International Triathlon Union events with a few highlights being a podium finish in Barbados (2nd) in 2015, a top 15 finish at the Continental Championship in Monterrey (14th) in 2015 and being selected to the U.S. team for the FISU World University Triathlon Championship in 2016.
Outside of triathlon, Welling was a volunteer coach for the Girls on the Run organization from 2013-2014. GOTR is a non-profit organization that inspires girls to become strong young women through the power of running, self-confidence, and self-respect.
A long-time Arizona native, Welling earned a B.S. in nutrition science and a minor in chemistry from the University of Arizona in 2013 and a Master's of Education, focusing on Higher and Postsecondary Education, from Arizona State University in 2015.
