Sun Devil Football letterwinners have raised more than $640,000 in support of the Sun Devil Football program and football student-athletes since the start of the 2014 football season.

More than 250 former football student-athletes, whose playing days at Arizona State University span more than eight decades from 1947 through 2017, have made contributions back to their alma mater in a variety of different ways.

Support from ASU's former student-athletes is vital to the long-term success of the athletics department and their commitment to their alma mater highlights two important pillars of the athletics department's Sun Devil Way, Sun Devils are Family and Sun Devils are for Life.

Bob Breunig, a College Football Hall of Fame member who played for the Sun Devils from 1972-74, provided a lead gift of $100,000 in the fall of 2014 to start the Football Lettermen Scholarship by Position Endowment. Since Breunig's initial lead gift more than four years ago, more than 220 former football student-athletes have contributed to the fund.

"I could not be more grateful for the incredible experience of playing championship football, earning a degree in business, meeting my wife of now 42 years, and discovering my Christian faith during my time as a student-athlete at ASU," Breunig says. "I currently serve on the ASU Board of Trustees, and ASU President Dr. Crow, Vice President for University Athletics Ray Anderson, and their staffs are on a super track for big things for the future. Community support is a vital part of the great work they are doing and keep giving back to ASU all you can."

Additionally, nine other former football student-athletes, inspired by Breunig's generosity, established their own football student-athlete scholarship endowments at a minimum of $25,000.

The Sun Devil Club, behind a $5.1 million merger from the Sun Angel Endowment, launched the Sun Devil Matching Gift Program in fall 2016 to establish scholarship endowments for football, wrestling and baseball student-athletes. Six of the football letterwinners who recently established scholarship endowments took advantage of this program to increase their impact on the football program and its student-athletes.

Currently there is more than $1M still available to go toward either establishing new football scholarship endowments or contributing to existing football scholarship endowments.
