TEMPE, Ariz. --- The Arizona State men's hockey team put the finishing touches on their historic season with their banquet Saturday night. During the banquet, head coach Greg Powers handed out the 2018-19 season team awards, voted on by the team and coaching staff.
Along with the awards, Powers named rising junior defenseman Jacob Wilson as the team's new alternate captain, replacing graduating senior Anthony Croston. He joins returning co-captains Brinson Pasichnuk and Tyler Busch, along with fellow alternate and roommate Dominic Garcia.
Team MVP: Joey Daccord
Daccord started every game for the Sun Devils, posting a 21-13-1 record, .926 save percentage and led the NCAA in the regular season with seven shutouts. The junior goaltender was a finalist for the coveted Mike Richter Award, which is annually given to the nation's best goaltender, and a nominee for the Hobey Baker Award. He was also named 2018-19 AHCA/CCM Division I Second Team West All-American and is the first player from ASU to earn such honors.
Rookie of the Year: Josh Maniscalco
Maniscalco dressed in all 35 games during his rookie collegiate season, while tallying four goals and 16 assists -- tying him with fellow freshman forward Demetrios Koumontzis for most points by a freshman. He is the first freshman defenseman in program history to reach the 20-point mark. Maniscalco held the other spot on the top defensive pairing with co-captain Brinson Pasichnuk. He had three game-winning assists this season, with two coming in overtime on game-winners.
Iron Man: Anthony Croston
The Iron Man is awarded to the player with the hardest work ethic off the ice. Croston put in time and effort off the ice not only during the off season, but during the season and in the classroom. He is one of four seniors graduating not only with their undergraduate degrees but also a masters in just four years. His time and dedication paid off as he donned the 'A' for the last three seasons after joining the program as a non-scholarship student-athlete. In Croston's four years with the program, he played in 127 games -- the most in program history and missing just three games over the course of his four years -- and tallied 66 points (25g-41a).
Practice Hero: Evan DeBrouwer
Even though DeBrouwer did not see a full game this season, he continuously elevated the game of his teammates during practices with his work ethic and performance between the pipes across from Joey Daccord. With Daccord's departure, DeBrouwer has the opportunity to compete for the starting goaltender position this upcoming season.
Drew Newmeyer Award (Best Teammate): Brinson Pasichnuk
Pasichnuk walked away with the Drew Newmeyer Award, which is annually handed out to the best teammate. The co-captain finished among the top defensemen in the country in plus-minus, goals scored and points, and was one of two defensemen named to the NCAA Midwest Regional All-Tournament team. He also hit the 30-point mark (13g-17a) in his 100th game as a Sun Devil against Quinnipiac in the Allentown Regional -- his first 30 point season and first by a Sun Devil defenseman in program history.
