STANFORD, Calif. – The No. 10 Arizona State Water Polo team came within striking distance but couldn't supply enough offense to complete a comeback, ultimately falling to No. 3 UCLA, 10-5, in the second quarterfinal match at the 2019 MPSF Championships.
The defense would offer strong resistance on both sides to begin the action as the game remained scoreless until there were two minutes to play in the first period when UCLA broke through for the first goal. The Bruins would tack on another score to go up 2-0 to end period one.
Senior Rosie Huck gave the Sun Devils life with two minutes remaining in the second period, after a nice dish from teammate Lieke Rogge to get ASU in the scoring column. The Devils would have two more opportunities to shorten the Bruin lead but ultimately came up short and went to the half trailing 5-1.
ASU started the second half with a burst of energy, striking for back-to-back goals off the hand of Lieke Rogge to cut UCLA's lead to 5-3. The goals marked Rogge's 27th and 28th in her career and her ninth multi-goal game of the season.
Senior Maud Koopman joined in on the run as well for the Sun Devil offense, shooting a quick corner shot past the outstretched arm of the Bruin goalie for the score. With the goal, Koopman has now scored in 11 consecutive matches and tallied 21 goals in that span. The Bruins would supply another goal before the end of the third period to push their lead to 6-4.
Koopman continued to make big shots in the final period, scoring off another great pass from senior P.J. Allin to give her two assists on the afternoon and once again get ASU within two goals, 7-5. Koopman's goal marked her 52nd goal of the 2019 season and eighth multi-goal game – tied with teammate Lieke Rogge for the team lead.
ASU's comeback would fall short as the Bruins scored the final three goals of the contest to claim the win.
The sixth-seeded Sun Devil Water Polo team will return back to the pool tomorrow morning at 11 a.m., when they take on seventh-seeded Indiana at Avery Aquatics Center. Fans can follow the action live via live stream by subscribing at http://www.mpsports.org/watch/ or via live stats at TheFosh.net.
