BERKELEY, Calif. – The Sun Devil Lacrosse team fell to California, 17-8, in the second game of the Bay Area road trip on Sunday afternoon at California Memorial Stadium.

Despite trailing a majority of the contest, the Sun Devils would put forth an encouraging second half effort in which their toughness and competitiveness were on display. The two teams played even after the break, with Arizona State generating and delivering on several scoring opportunities.

Emily Glagolev has been on a mission lately, and her performance today was no different. She once again led the Sun Devils' offensive unit, recording three points (two goals & one assist) while putting constant pressure on the opposing defense with her ability to both pass and score. After a rare game in which she was held without a goal, attacker Kerri Clayton made up for it with a strong offensive outing. The redshirt junior attacker scored a pair of goals, giving her five multi-goal games this season and 11 in her career.

Goalkeeper Berkeley Bonneau was tested early and often this afternoon, responding with her seventh double-digit save performance of the season. Bonneau came through for the Sun Devils on several point-blank chances and free-position shots, keeping the deficit from growing and setting up a comeback attempt in the second half. Sophomore midfielder Maddy Hunter was active in her return from injury, earning a pair of draw controls while patrolling the midfield.

Returning to the site in which they made history with their first Pac-12 victory in program history, Arizona State picked up where they left off, striking first in Berkeley. Emily Glagolev added to her team-leading assist total, dishing out her 16th assist of the season to Paige McGlothlin, who converted on her 12th goal of 2019. The freshman McGlothlin continues to come into her own, scoring at least one goal in six of her last eight games. Two minutes later, the Golden Bears responded with a game-tying with just under 25 minutes left in the first half, the first of six consecutive goals for the home side.

The Sun Devils got one back courtesy of another freshman, Kaylon Buckner, who sent an absolute rocket of a shot to the top corner and past the Cal goaltender. For Buckner, it was the third game in row in which she scored a goal, bringing her season total to eight. The Golden Bears would control play for the remainder of the half, finishing the final 12 minutes on a 5-0 run to take a 11-2 lead into the break. Goalkeeper Sophia Thomas made her first appearance of the season, making one save in just under four minutes of action during the first half in relief of Bonneau.

The message that was sent by the coaching staff at halftime clearly got through, as the team responded with a much-improved effort on both ends of the field. At the 24:45 mark in the second half, Maria Villanti opened the scoring for the Sun Devils with a free-position goal to cut the lead back down to single digits.

"Clearly we came out in the second half with a different intensity, which I was pleased to see," Coach Martinez Connor remarked. "If we came out ready to play in the first half, the game would have been just as competitive as our first one against them."

From this point on, Arizona State began to build momentum that would lead to their best offensive portion of the game. Three goals over the next three minutes caused the fans in Berkeley to get restless, as they saw their Golden Bears begin to struggle against the ASU pressure. Emily Glagolev's aggressive run at the net paid off, as she scored with 18:31 left to make it a 13-4 Cal lead. The Sun Devils leading goal-scorer, Kerri Clayton, did what she does best, providing the Sun Devils with a lift thanks to back-to-back goals. Clayton now has 19 goals on the season and has scored in 25 of the 28 games the Sun Devils have played in. With the Golden Bears seeing their lead trimmed to 13-6 at the halfway point of the second half, the home side was forced to take a timeout.

Continuing to fight throughout the entire afternoon, the Sun Devils would prove they weren't done yet. Emily Glagolev scored for the second time and continued her hot streak, giving her 20 points over her last six games. Later in the period, a beautiful sequence of passing led to a goal by Kylie Kroeger to cut the lead to the smallest it had been since early in the first half, with the assist going to Julia Burns. Both players reached double-digits on the season in each respective category. A valiant comeback effort eventually came up short, as the Golden Bears held on to a 17-8 victory.

"They continued to battle and fight all afternoon, highlighted by the success the offense had midway through the second half," Coach Martinez Connor observed. "As a coaching staff, will review the film and identify several things we can work on before we return home next week."
