TEMPE, Ariz. – Familiar foes represent the next challenge as the Sun Devil Lacrosse team travels to the Bay Area to take on No. 20 Stanford and California this upcoming weekend.
The first rematch, against the Stanford Cardinal, will take place at Maloney Field in Laird Q. Cagan Stadium on Friday, March 29 at 7 p.m. The Sun Devils will then take on California after a quick trip to Berkeley on Sunday, March 31 at 12 p.m. Golden Bears' home lacrosse games take place at California Memorial Stadium, which also serves as the home venue for the football program.
"Our focus is on making the proper adjustments in order to get different results this weekend," Coach Martinez Connor remarked. "In both games, each side will be familiar with each other, putting even more emphasis on execution."
The dynamic duo of Emily Glagolev and Kerri Clayton have carried a majority of the load offensively, as both attackers have enjoyed extremely productive seasons. Glagolev, the team leader in points (25), has shown versatility with the ability to both score and facilitate. Her 13 assists not only lead the team, but also ties her for third in the Pac-12 Conference. Through nine games in 2019, the sophomore ranks second in the conference averaging 1.44 assists/game. Glagolev is also second in the Pac-12 with seven assists during conference play.
Picking up where she left off last season, Kerri Clayton has excelled offensively despite garnering a majority of the attention from defenses. While she continues to be a goal-scoring threat with a team-leading 17 goals this season, Clayton's passing prowess has been on display recently as opponents attempt to take away her shots. She has at least one assist in each of her last five games, pushing her season total to seven. After scoring in both games this past week, the redshirt junior attacker now has at least one goal in 24 of the 26 games she has played in since becoming a Sun Devil.
Goalkeeper Berkeley Bonneau has been outstanding serving as the last line of defense for Arizona State this season, sitting at or near the top of the conference in several significant statistical categories. She ranks second in the Pac-12 and 10th in the nation making 11.11 saves/game. The junior has reached double digits saves six times this season, highlighted by a record-breaking 20-save performance against No. 23 Colorado. Bonneau is one of 17 goalies nationally to have reached the 100-save plateau so far in 2019. Not only has she started all nine games for the Sun Devils, Bonneau has also played all 541 possible minutes in net.
Arizona State has received contributions from individuals throughout the roster, including a talented freshman class. So far in 2019, 11 of the 12 members of ASU's second Division I signing class have seen action (Katie Brodsky, Kaylon Buckner, Morgan McCaffrey, Mallory Martel, Kara Antonucci, Olivia Kroah, Paige McGlothlin, Cabrini Class, Erica Odell, Olivia Hood, and Sydney Payne). The first-year players have combined to start 35 games, recording 27 points (17 goals and 10 assists) through nine games this season. The group has also made an impact in several other facets of the game, picking up 63 ground balls, causing 29 turnovers, and earning 30 draw controls.
The Sun Devils prepare to embark on their second road trip of the season, hoping to duplicate the success they had on their first road trip. ASU looked comfortable during their first experience in an away environment, dominating Oregon on their way to an 18-10 victory. During the two-game road trip, three different Sun Devils broke program single-game records. Julia Burns' six assists and Emily Glagolev's eight points against Oregon represented school high marks. Berkeley Bonneau's 20 saves against Colorado also set a school record.
For the second time in 2019, Arizona State will take on a Top-25 Stanford Cardinal squad. The game is scheduled for Friday, March 29 at 7:00 p.m. The reigning Pac-12 Tournament Champions are coached by Amy Bokker, who is in the midst of her 11th season at the helm of the Stanford Lacrosse program. The Cardinal are 7-3 so far this season, currently sitting in third place in the Pac-12 with a 3-2 record. In the first matchup between the two teams this past Saturday, Sun Devil goalkeeper Berkeley Bonneau turned in yet another fantastic performance. Her 15 saves kept ASU within striking distance for a majority of the contest. Freshman Mallory Martel notched her first collegiate goal during the 15-4 loss. Cardinal attacker Katherine Gjertsen finished the contest with six points (four goals & two assists) to lead the way for Stanford. Watch the game live at the following link.
"Stanford is so tough to play against, especially when they are at home," Coach Martinez Connor mentioned. "Our team must be prepared for a full 60-minute battle with one of the top teams in the country."
Traveling across the Bay, the Sun Devils return to the site where they made history to face-off with California on Sunday, March 31 at 12:00 p.m. A season ago, Emily Glagolev scored an overtime goal as the program earned its first-ever victory over a Pac-12 opponent in Berkeley. The Golden Bears (5-7) are led by Head Coach Brooke Eubanks, who is in her fifth season in charge of the Cal Lacrosse program. A 2-3 conference record places them fourth in the Pac-12 standings. Arizona State is looking to make up for a narrow loss to the same Golden Bears side this past Monday. ASU led 11-9 late in the contest, but were unable to prevent a late Cal comeback to force overtime. A little over a minute into overtime, the Golden Bears scored a sudden victory goal to earn the 12-11 win. Four different Sun Devils recorded multi-goal performances and the Maroon and Gold held Cal scoreless for over 29-minutes, but were unable to secure their second Pac-12 victory. "There is some unfinished business as we felt we let one slip away against Cal," Coach Martinez Connor stated. "I expect the team to come out motivated and hungry this weekend."
