AUSTIN, Texas – Cierra Runge represented the first All-American this week for Sun Devil women's swimming, racing to a fourth-place finish in the championship heat of the 500 freestyle. The finish came just hours after she set the Arizona State record in the preliminary round.
Runge entered the evening session as the No. 1 seed after touching the wall at a school record of 4:34.64 to take the top mark in the preliminary round. The junior put up a time of 4:35.39 in the finals to score 15 points for the Sun Devils.
Fanny Teijonsalo and Emma Nordin also secured first alternate spots after placing 17th in the 50 free and 500 free, respectively. Teijonsalo's time of 22.13 missed a school record by six hundredths (0.06) of a second, but does secure her the second fastest time in ASU history.
Nordin touched at 4:39.36 in the 500 free for the sixth-fastest time in Sun Devil history.
Over in the diving well, 2018 All-American Frida Kaellgren took the one-meter springboard for the Sun Devils, ultimately placing 34th with a score of 256.20.
After two days, ASU currently holds 25 points for 20th place.
The Sun Devils are back in action tomorrow morning for day two of the 2019 Women's Swimming and Diving National Championships. ASU will compete in the 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, 200 medley relay and three-meter springboard.
