Sun Devils Fall to No. 14 Cal

Sun Devils Fall to No. 14 CalSun Devils Fall to No. 14 Cal
BERKELEY, Calif. – Arizona State ended its first Pac-12 road trip with a 5-2 loss against No. 14 California Saturday in Berkeley.

The Sun Devils have been a force in doubles play all season, including their previous matchup with Cal when they took the point from the Bears with wins on courts one and three.

California managed to keep the Sun Devils quiet Saturday, and kept ASU off the board early for just the third time this season. Even though Kolarova/Slaysman were on their way to a win over No. 23 Bright/Dunk on court two, play was suspended with the ASU duo up 5-4 as Cal took wins on courts one and three.

In singles play, the Devils found themselves in a 2-0 hole after court one went the way of the Bears, but the remaining courts were up for grabs as the other five would end up going the distance to determine a victor.

Courts two and five would also eventually give the Bears two more points to clinch the match for California, and ASU picked up two points from courts two and four.

Lauryn John-Baptiste recorded her second win over a ranked opponent this season when she defeated No. 115 Katerina Stloukalova. John-Baptiste dropped the first set 6-1, but put up back-to-back 6-2 sets to put the Devils on the board.

Sammi Hampton would make it a 5-2 final when she held off Maria Smith 6-1, 4-6, 7-5 to close the match.

ASU returns home next weekend as Utah and Colorado come down from the mountains to visit the Devils at the Whiteman Tennis Center Friday and Saturday.
