FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Five Sun Devil divers will take the stage at the NCAA Zone E Championships taking place from Monday to Wednesday on the campus of Northern Arizona University.
Ashley McCool, Youssef Selim and David Hoffer will compete in all three events (one meter, three meter and platform) while Frida Kaellgren and Brandon Spencer will look to qualify in both springboard events.
The championships come two weeks after Selim took home two Pac-12 Championships in the one-meter and platform events, becoming the first to do so since 2015. Selim's 70.05 margin of victory in the one-meter was also the largest in the event at the conference championships in 14 years when Sun Devil for Life Joona Puhakka won the event by 74.95.
To qualify for the Zone Championships, women had to put up a score of at least 265 in one meter, 280 in three meter in 225 in platform. Both women qualified for one meter in the first meet of the season at Florida State, while McCool put up a qualifying mark in three meter at USC and platform at the Pac-12 Championships. Kaellgren notched her three meter score at UCLA.
On the men's side, Selim and Hoffer qualified for both springboard events at Florida State. Selim took a zone-qualifying mark in platform at the Texas Diving Invitational and Hoffer added his at the Pac-12 Championships. Rounding out the qualifiers is freshman Spencer, who took three meter at USC and one meter at the Pac-12 Championships.
The Zone Championships is essentially a regional for diving, as the NAU-hosted leg features schools from the Pac-12, Mountain West, MPSF and WAC conferences. Each zone is allotted a specific number of qualifiers per event.
Taking a preliminary-final format, all divers will have a chance to compete in the morning preliminary round. The top 18 finishers from the preliminary round will then move on to the finals later that afternoon.
The top eight-placing women to compete in the springboard events will move on to the National Championship from Zone E and the top nine will move on from platform while the top four men in one meter, five in three meter and six in platform will earn a bid to Austin.
Action in Flagstaff will kick off on Monday with the men on one meter and the women on three meter. The divers will flip springboards for competition on Tuesday and then both will compete on tower on Wednesday. A full schedule can be seen below.
