TEMPE, Ariz. – After hosting their three-day, seven team, 15-match Cross-Conference Invitational, the No. 9 Sun Devil Water Polo team will play away from home in two different tournaments over the next month, starting with the UCSD Triton Invitational this weekend (Feb. 9-10).
Joining the No. 9 Sun Devils in the tournament are six of the top-10 teams and 13 of the top-25 teams including No. 1 USC, No. 3 UCLA, No. 6 UC Irvine, No. 7 UC Santa Barbara, No 8 Michigan, No. 11 UC Davis, No. 13 Loyola Marymount, No. 16 Long Beach State, No. 20 UC San Diego, No. 21 CSUN, No. 22 San Diego State, No. 25 Marist, Cal State East Bay (RV), Pomona-Pitzer (ranked No. 1 in DIII poll), and Santa Clara.
The Sun Devils' first match will be Saturday vs. No. 22 San Diego State at 12:10 pm MT/11:10 am PT at UCSD's Canyonview Pool.
Dependent on the outcome of the match, the winner will play the winner of No. 8 Michigan/No. 21 CSUN at 6:50 pm MT/5:50 pm PT Saturday and the loser will play the loser of No. 8 Michigan/No. 21 CSUN at 5:30 pm MT/4:30 pm PT. Sunday's schedule will be dependent on the outcomes of all Saturday's matches.
Senior Maud Koopman is fourth in the best water polo conference in the nation in goals scored this season, with 19 total (2.71 per game). Bente Rogge (15 goals/2.14) is just outside the top-10 in goals per game. Sophomore goalkeeper Bridget Johnston ranks fourth in GAA (6.91).
As a team, the Sun Devils are third in the conference in goals scored per game (13.29) as well as in fewest goals allowed per game (6.57).
Last weekend, ASU went 4-1 at their own Cross-Conference Challenge with top-25 wins over No. 12 Princeton, No. 24 California Baptist, No. 25 Azusa Pacific and a win over Iona, who was receiving votes in last week's poll.
