TEMPE, Ariz. – The Sun Devil Lacrosse team prepares for their final two games of a five-game home stand to open the season, as they host Vanderbilt on Tuesday, March 5 at 4 p.m. and USC on Friday, March 8 at 5 p.m. Both games will take place at Sun Devil Soccer/Lacrosse Stadium, where the Sun Devils are 2-0 this season.
Arizona State is coming off a weekend in which they split a pair of games on Friday and Sunday, narrowly falling to Columbia before bouncing back to defeat Stetson in a dominant defensive effort.
Taylor Carson recorded her second consecutive hat trick and Berkeley Bonneau recorded a season-high 12 saves, but the Sun Devils come back effort fell short against Columbia.
Back at Sun Devil/Lacrosse Stadium after being forced to Scottsdale's Notre Dame Prep on Friday, Arizona State looked at home as they cruised to an 11-3 victory over Stetson. The three goals are the fewest allowed in program history, as the Sun Devils rode great goalkeeping and exceptional defense to capture the victory. Kerri Clayton and Maddy Hunter provided all the offense the Devils would need, each registering a hat trick.
"I like the way we responded last weekend," Coach Martinez Connor said. "We will get to test ourselves against two high-caliber opponents coming up this next week."
Eight different Sun Devils have scored multiple goals and four players have multiple assists this season as ASU has featured a balanced attack. Through three games, the Maroon and Gold lead the Pac-12 allowing only 7.33 goals/game.
Vanderbilt is led by Head Coach Beth Hewitt, who is in her first season in charge of the Commodores after serving as an associate head coach for the past four seasons. Vanderbilt is off to a 4-0 start so far this season, most recently defeating Louisville on Wednesday in the second of a four-game road trip. The Commodores will travel to Denver to face the ninth-ranked Pioneers on Sunday, March 3 before coming to Tempe. Midfielder Sophie Furlong has a team-leading 13 points and 11 goals. Goalkeeper Lily Argyle is allowing 6.97 goals/game so far this season. Sunglasses will be given away to the first 50 fans who show up to Tuesday's 4 p.m. game. The game will be a Pac-12 Plus broadcast, available for fans to stream online and through the Pac-12 Now App.
"Vanderbilt is off to a tremendous start," Coach Martinez Connor remarked. "We know they will be playing with confidence, so we will have to come out with great intensity."
Pac-12 Conference play kicks-off next Friday, when the Sun Devils take on USC at 5 p.m. The two teams got familiar with each other a season ago, facing off three times. In the first round of the 2018 Pac-12 Tournament, Arizona State put a scare into the 20th-ranked Trojans, as the game remained tied late in the first half with the Devils entering halftime trailing by three.
"USC is a Top-25 program for a reason," Coach Martinez Connor mentioned. "They are extremely talented and well coached, making them a tough team to beat."
NOTE: In just their second season at the Division I level, the Sun Devils boast a talented and young roster. So far during the 2019 season, 11 members of the freshman class have seen playing time (Kaylon Buckner, Morgan McCaffrey, Paige McGlothlin, Mallory Martel, Olivia Kroah, Olivia Hood, Kara Antonucci, Katie Brodsky, Erica Odell, Cabrini Class, Sydney Payne). Additionally, Caryn Takeuchi and Mia Harp made their Sun Devil debuts this past weekend after sitting out all of last season due to knee injuries.
Both games next week will be broadcasted live through the Pac-12 Digital Stream. Live stats will be provided for the media and public. A link to Friday's broadcast of the Pac-12 opener against USC can be found here. There will be plenty of opportunities to see Sun Devil Lacrosse in action throughout the season. The Trojans have gotten off to a 3-0 this season and compete twice more before they head to Tempe, with a trip to Boston on tap this weekend. Friday features a Top-25 matchup with Boston College before heading down the road on Sunday to play Boston University.
