IRVINE, Calif. – The No. 8 Sun Devil Water Polo team finished play at the Barbara Kalbus Invitational hosted by UC Irvine, finishing in eighth place in the 16-team field comprised of all top-25 teams.
ASU finished the weekend with a match against No. 6 Michigan, a 9-5 win for the Wolverines.
Michigan took a 3-0 lead through the first minute of the second quarter before Bente Rogge scored the first goal of the contest for the Sun Devils at the 6:16 mark of the second quarter.
Viktoria Orlova scored with 2:26 left in the second half to pull the Devils within two, 4-2, but Michigan scored the first two goals of the third quarter to lead, 6-2.
Meghan Beaudet scored again at the 4:04 mark of the third quarter before the Wolverines scored two straight in the final two minutes of the period to lead, 8-3, going into the final eight minutes.
The Sun Devils scored back-to-back goals in the first three minutes of the fourth quarter behind the efforts of P.J. Allin and Maud Koopman to pull within three, 8-5, but could not overcome the deficit as Michigan tacked on one more goal in the final two minutes to win, 9-5.
ASU returns home to host No. 2 Stanford in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) match on Saturday, Mar. 9 at 1 p.m. All home matches are free to the public.
