IRVINE, Calif. – After a tough battle with the nation's top team early Saturday morning, the No. 8 Sun Devil water polo team dropped a close 10-8 match to No. 5 Hawaii.
The Sun Devils will play No. 6 Michigan for seventh place on Sunday morning at 9 am PT/10 am MT.
Game 1: #1 USC 7, #8 ASU 1
Bente Rogge got the Sun Devils on the board, scoring with 5:42 remaining in the contest but the deficit would be too much to overcome as ASU fell to No. 1 USC, 7-1, in the final match of group play.
The No. 1 team in the nation scored two goals in the first quarter, one on a five-meter penalty, and tacked on two more in the second to lead, 4-0, at the halftime break.
USC's Alejandra Aznar scored twice within just over a minute of each other in the third quarter while the Trojans scored one more with two minutes remaining in the third to lead, 7-0, going into the final frame.
Bridget Johnston played the entire game in goal for the Sun Devils while Amanda Longan got the start and win for the Trojans.
Game 2: #5 Hawaii 10, #8 ASU 8
Hawaii scored the first three goals of the contest before Viktoria Orlova put ASU on the board with 3:54 remaining in the first quarter. The Rainbow Wahine led, 5-2, after the first eight minutes of play after Lieke Rogge tacked on a goal 53 seconds after Orlova's.
Koopman pulled the Devils within two, 5-3, early in the second but Hawaii took an 8-3 lead into halftime. Hawaii scored a goal apiece in the third and fourth quarter but Arizona State would close the contest on a 5-1 scoring run to pull within two.
Johnston and Belen Ehinger both saw time in goal for ASU.
